Title: John Smith's Super Bug (I) I/Gas Final Moment...
Post by: deano on August 10, 2011, 16:58:23 pm
I should devote this post to the guy in Florida who claims to own (and won't show anyone photos...), John Smith's old I/Gasser. Well, you don't. Here is the first photo to prove that John Smith's car is certainly no longer --- in any form. This photo was taken back in 1972,  after the 1972 NHRA Grand-Nationals at Sanair, Quebec, Canada. And yes, that is Mark and Paul Schley in the photo, and perhaps Willie too. It is a sad moment for this famous VW. RIP, Super Bug I....

I don't fully understand the high back passenger seat shown in the car.

It is a sad moment for this famous VW, but it was after John sold it to the new owner. It didn't last long... RIP, Super Bug II....
But surely that's Super Bug 1 and John was driving it?

Thanks Keith, I should have known you had the "goods" already. I thought John had sold the car, before it was crashed. I stand corrected.

I don't fully understand the high back passenger seat shown in the car.

But looking at the lump in the roof on the black eye pic, good job it was there! :o

That's the single roll-over bar. It did its job, better than you'd expect!

I talked to Willie and Mark Schley last night and they remember this moment all too well. John Smith was knocked unconscious in that wild crash, at was iffy for over a day. This previously unknown photo was taken at the track in Canada, just after they pushed the car onto John's trailer. John's dad was at the hospital. At that moment, these guys did not know if John would pull through or not.
