With tracks here in So cal being open most of the year I was able to take the old cab to fontana yesterday to try complete my NHRA license, after heavy rain tuesday and wednesday I had decided not to go to Irwindale thursday evening even though it was open.
Fontana had an open to anything type test n tune day and it was really suprising to see the variety of cars their from Junior dragsters to Top sportsman and even a Fuel altered.

There were about 12 Vws in attendance mostly getting some testing in, the quickest of the day was Dave Perkins in his wild looking 1303/Super beetle cabrio with a 8.26@164[ I think that mph but was difficult to read scoreboard]

I did 4 passes total and completed my license with a 9.93@134 and 9.70@139, as I had not driven the car on 1/4 mile for over 4 years I started with a real soft launch[2.20 60ft !!! ] 11.00@125mph to check out everything and see how it felt compared to the new cab, all was good so next pass slightly more on the launch 1.82 60ft and 10.30@134mph, had a little oil clean up after this as the dipstick was not sealing well Angry but the oil catch tray caught it all so nothing on the track  Cool.
With that sorted I got a little more aggresive with clutch but still real soft compared to normal, 1.55 60ft and 9.93@134,good enough for pass number 5 towards my license Smiley after this pass I found that one exhaust to head stud was loose and was pulling out the head so a quick repair was made well enough to hopefully hold for one more pass to get the license done, I put the clutch settings back to what I ran at Barona last week, also took a little fuel out at the top of the fuel map as it is running real rich and that was good enough to go 1.33 60ft and 9.70@139mph, license passes completed and everything was signed off as good  Cool.

Now I will get back onto the JPM headed engine and get as much done as I can before we return to England next week.

Heres the 9.70 pass[ a little trivia, my 1st 9 sec pass in USA was a 9.70 at fontana a few years ago now]

For some reason i like the movies off this car more then movies from your other faster one.
It looks more spectacular with the wheelies and the car goiing al over the track.
But also looking forward to see the first 7 from the other car.

This was interesting to me, I didn't see what it ran but sounded good driving through the lanes, its mechanically injected draw through set up, not very common

Hi Henk,

I have to agree with you as do most people I talked to about it over the last couple of years, part of it for me is this is still a VW, the other car is more of a machine built to do a job, it has grown on me as its got quicker but if I ever achieve my ultimate goal with this car of running an 8 with no wheelie bars & stock VW suspension Shocked I think it will be a greater accomplishment than 7s in the other car

cheers Richie

Thanks for sharing Richie. I have to agree with Trond, this is great motivation for me as well. Cool to read that Dave Perkins is at it again. What is his engine set-up? Are we talking yet another hyper performance car aiming for mid 7`s?

And what boost levels are you pushing through your non intercooled version?

Again thanks and say hello to everyone I know over there.

Thanks for sharing Richie Cool I know that it's more common on California to see air cooled VW's lined up with all the great American iron in the staging lanes but it's not very common in Florida Undecided  Not so many Aircooled VW drag racers in my neck of the woods. It's very cool to see this. Maybe someday I will get my car to the track here in Florida at the Bradenton Motorsports track. I just don't have the money or time right now to risk breaking it.

Thanks for the update & pic's Richie & Jo!
Watching the old Cab always makes me smile  Grin
I dig the "new" car, but the original Cab is one of my favorite VW's of all time.
Cheers pal...

I really dont know much about Dave Perkins car, i believe its mechanical injected, turbo of course & on methanol, he built it all himself and I dont think he did all that work to run 8s, so yes 7s would be the goal I would think Cool

I am leaving at 15lbs boost and did see 30 on one pass un-intentionally but its about 25lbs in 3rd and 4th gear currently, I have got a bunch of timing pulled out right now to be safe

Are you doing water injection instead to control IAT or is it not an issue?
That thing just hooks up and explodes off the line!  Cool

Get much interest with you UK plate?

No smaller stroke than that now, doesn't need to be that big with a turbo on it, just needs to be real strong, also trying to keep pushrods short
