Title: SPG Roller Bearing Cranks? Good for the Street? Post by: Fasterbrit on August 10, 2008, 15:06:51 pm I have an 82 mm SPG crank that is in very good condition with zero twist etc. I am thinking of using it in a hot street motor that will not see strip action. I realise there are issues of the crank twisting when heavily loaded on slicks. What about using them on the street? Anyone have any info or stories to share? Ratto? Thanks, matt

Post by: Tony M on August 10, 2008, 18:04:00 pm Has the crank been pin'd - as each layer gets pressed, all the newer ones were pin'd at each layer - if it has you will have no problems with it. I twisted on old 69mm crank after a 8000rpm pull, but it wasent pin'd. Have built 3 or 4 with these cranks and have had no problems. The only draw back, Heavy.

Post by: boxertje on August 11, 2008, 20:55:27 pm Last year I bought 2 of these beautifull cranks,brand new!!!!!!!!(I think)They have a litle surface rust.I would like to use one in a futur project and sell maybe one.The problem is the same,......nobody can check these cranks (or pin them)Somebody in Holland,germany or belgium???

I did get told when I built the engine though to never use it with slicks. (It's a street car so no problems there) I also got advised to not run a compression ratio of over 8:1 The advice was from Geoff Thomas (from Autocavan) who was the sole person to import them into the UK back in the day apparently. Long term plan was to eventually build a proper engine with a forged 82 and higher ratios but I thought I'd start mild and build up to mental when I was richer! (Hasn't happened yet) :-[ |
