Title: How do we brake at the end of the 1/4 mile !!!!
Post by: mr horsepower on April 25, 2013, 10:26:35 am
As we know going of throttle and hitting the brakes is always a scary moment .
Mayby we can sheare some important info ,so that other racers can learn from it .
And not ending with the wrong side up..
So ,
How do you guys do it and what to look out for????

To answer your question: you do not brake at the end of the 1/4" mile.

Shift to neutral and let the wind do its job before you touch the brakes.

I'm putting it in neutral, and shutting down the engine at 402meters. My hand is at the key from the 300 meter mark. (I am never ever going to engine brake the car. I love my engine to much  :D ) . Then I just roll down to about 120 km/t before I touch the brakes. Have worked fine for me.. but I'm not a fast guy. Passing the 402 at 180-185 km/t at 7500 rpm.

Hi

I think it depends ...
I would not just let the wind do its job at 250 km/h

What I prefer are 4 disc brakes although they are for bikes and and a braking ratio that is according to the tires used ( front & rear)

I drive into the chute then neutral. If the chute opens that is :0) Otherwise you better break hard especially at Gardermoen. At Kjula we have 1200 m to the end of the track

At Kjula you stay on the throttle until 804 meters then cruise the 2000 meters or so back to the depo. A nice way to enjoy the scenery. A lovely track indeed!  :)

That is just about it,[new cab 1st pull chute]into neutral, let the car settle and brake, some use only the handbrake to gently slow down but it does need a good run off to do that,I never use the engine to brake,it unloads the rear suspension to much, particularly on a swingaxle car

cheers Richie

Not all chassi configurations would react the same to handbrake/ air resistance/ or brakes. I think thats note worthy.
BTW people doing 513 km/h make the turn off at Gardermoen. ;-)

So true, but often dual chutes  :)

There were no big issue getting the car to stop though

You have to start first Henry, If you don't start, you don't have a braking problem ;D

Thats  below the belly Paul  ;)

I just want to discus a safety issue because the bugs are going faster every year.
And we don t want somebody ending in the guardrail
And what to do if you had lets say,A stock body Swingaxle bug and lots of power
How wil it react wen you go of the pedal and what to do to keep safe.

Thanks guys
Gr henri
