Title: Unknow performance engine KRE from the 70's - Help appreciated
Post by: guillaume on April 23, 2017, 12:01:46 pm
Hello VW fellows,

I recently bought a performance engine build during the 70's as the seller said, built by KRE (Kawell Racing Engine).
It was a bargain at $800 ;).

He said it was a 1835 and after opening it, here is what I discovered : a 2083 engine.

Here is the list of parts and pictures :

- Dual oïl regulation engine case drill for full flow (std / std)
- Engle V26 camshaft,
- Okrasa 78.4 counterweight crankshaft
- VW beam that seems to be rework with added oil groove
- unknow oil pump
- type 4 oil radiator
- unknow pistons and cylinders 92mm (pistons have pockets machined on them)
- KRE heads ported and polished, 40 x 35,5 and dual springs
- 1.4 rockers (unknow brand). They are stamped DE and SE. DO you know who made those ?
- Tall manifolds for IDA - brand unknow - align ports
- dual Weber 48 IDA carbs

Do you have any informations on those kind of engine, or how many HP it could make ?

Rocker arms are Sig Erson. Prone to breakage, so I wouldn't recommend running them. Good score, though.

Yep. let those rocker arms reside or use them on a sgl spring.
Wrt power. A good guess would be somewhere in the 140  to 150 hp range.

Could have been an Ascot, short off road course type motor, I have bought a very similar spec motor like that in the past . You might contact Dave Greiner @ Proformance in Orange. He did quite a bit of that type of racing.   Nice find!!!

Thanks a lot for your help guys :)
I will contact Dave Greiner and Dave Kawell this week and let you know.

The flywheel is drill for 8 dowels but seems stock weight.

That is a real bargain, very nice parts. Please have it re-built as it was originally, the V26/GB 309 is one of my all time favourite cams. All you need is a Magneto.

It looks like lot's of people have very good opinions about this cam. I'm wonder why it was discontinued or which grind can replace it?

Back in 2008 we special ordered a V26 cam directly from Engle. It was for a 88 x 74, small valve street engine that was to run 40 PII Solex carbs. You might call Engle and inquire if they will still make one.
