Title: Flanged Crankshaft - which brand to choose?
Post by: Stev on January 08, 2018, 19:53:34 pm
Hi guys,

i start building my engine. Iīm looking for a flanged crankshaft but not sure which is the right for my setup. I heard a lot of good things about Scat and Bugpack, not sure if i ever heard about a flanged crank from AA Performance. I have an offer for a Scat and an AA, the Scat is much more expensive and now the question to you, which one should i use?

The engine:
84-88mm crankshaft
4" bore
MS 230
Raptor CAM
EFI
Python

Thanks a lot :-)

Regards
Steven

ps: if there is anybody who would like to sell a new flanged crank with all type 4 Mains und 84 - 88mm you a very welcome to write me a pm.

I would go for the Scat.

High quality part.

I'm building a 2919 using a Scat pro drag lightweight Crank.

Cheers, Nick

If you want to be on the save side i would recommend the same - billet light weight scat , most they have 86 in stock . we are testing an AA but do not have any results on a smaller engine

Hi and thanks for your reply.

I canīt find the Scat light weight on the webside.

- Udo, why do you prefer the "light weight" version? Do you have one in Stock?

I have to ask which scat version the guy offered me.

2 vote for scat
0 Bugpack
0 AA

Hello,

I have the scat cranks in stock.

82-84-90-92 strokers is what i have on the shelf  "flanged style".

The 90 stroker is all type 4 mains, the other ones are only type 4 "middle".

No experience with AA. I prefer the CB cranks or DPR cranks(if available) ,but SCAT is on top.

We are also working on a brand new crank, made in europe,on a swedish forging.More on that later.

COOL!
I ordered the first Gene Berg crank to Sweden in 1977. (Welded)
Then I borrowed it to Christer Lindström at Beta Racing in Avesta and introduced him to Gene. He was key in working with Gene and Bofors steel to start up the famous business of Swedish crank forgings and US machined in Orange CA.
Happy to see the story in having some kind of continuation.  Good luck!
Ahhh by the way, at some time I also introduced Jake Raby to the posibilities on German or Swedish forgings for TIV cranks. Volume was too low and it never materialized.

For street use those AA forged seem to work. i build some Type4 engines with it also a 3,0 for circuit racing with 260 hp. works well so far

Hi Udo,

itīs an AA Billet 88mm, but i think i will take the scat. i talked to eddie from scat, he told me that the billet version they offered on ther website is the "light weight" version without the holes.

By the way, scat rods are good enough for my setup? I think the rev limiter will be at 6500.

Cheers
Steven

I have Scat rods in my JPM built 2387 producing 300+ hp.
Upgraded with Carrillo bolts though.

.   If you will not rev that high I would recommend the one without the holes for light weight. It is much more expensive . I have it for making 9000 + rpm's.
