Finally got off of my lazy arse and media blasted the chrome then sprayed the first coat of etching primer to my 1968  Porsche 911 steel wheel. Will eventually go on my '67, but for now... it'll be in the trunk as a spare. Next steps will be the filler/sanding primer, then the final semi-gloss silver. Same paint I used on my 356 wheels from two years ago.

Nico, that wheel looks cool. Only thing I'd change is lower the shine on the black.

Say Mark, what brand of paint is the semi-gloss silver? Need to paint some wiper arms. Wheel look good? you have the whole set?

Since I can't afford the Wurth silver spray paint @ $21.99 a can, I found a nice match with Dupli-Color #1679 Silver Metallic at less than half of the price. Plus, it's lacquer and not only cures quicker, but looks much more like a factory sheen. I don't like things that appear to be over-restored and prefer the subtle look. Thanks Mark, that' exactly what I'm looking for, to do wiper arms and a license plate bracket for rear deck lid. which is already blasted. That paint should work fine.

You probably already know where to get that brand, but NAPA, Autozone, O'Reilly, etc. will gladly order you the primers and paint.

finished painting my spare wheel in this perfect eighty degree dry weather. I love So Cal.

Looks good Mark. That wheel would bolt right up to my 911. I painted the Brazilian 4.5 steelies on my 64 with the Duplicolor silver metallic, they look perfect as does yours. No clear.

Thanks, Mike. YES... no clear! But I'd like to experiment with this spare and try some semi-gloss clear to see if I like it.

That's so far down the road... but they'll have no caps. I've always dug steel 911 by themselves. Also with black steel non-capped lug nuts. In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy the alloys.

I don't have such high emotions about them, like Sprint Stars they're very generic "sporty" steel wheel from mid 60's to mid 70's.

What if you let them cure for a long while, then wet sand and maybe rub them a little? Might get the right sheen to it.

JHU, that link that you posted has some very cool cars... but THIS, I LIKE!

I'd lose the whitewall tires and fit some period perfect alloy wheels. Then slightly raise the front end or simply go with smaller profile tires up front so the wheel arches were better matched. Always had a soft spot for European estates/wagons.

Ironic that you mention that... I've been staring at the painted wheel since the day I painted it and while I dig the color, the sheen/finish isn't doin' it for me. Perhaps a wet sand (maybe on the sanding) and taking some solvent based (Sunrise Glaze) two component wax to 'em will achieve that look for which I'm searching. Thanks for the inspiration. We'll see what happens then I can finally go get my spare tire mounted on it. Which is why I haven't done so.

Wish I could find the pic of my trunk, I'm running a silver 5.5" Porsche steel with a hubcap for spare. You'd love it against the Java Green.
