Title: MagNETOs
Post by: SlingShot on November 22, 2007, 04:05:38 am
We all have seen them, but I don't know a lot about them, except they look cool as hell. Who runs one on their car? Are there significant power advantages over other ignition systems? Oh yeah,  if you got any pics show em.

I ran three cars with them: the chop-top, Flashback and my 1951 Okrasa-engined Split. Probably not as good technologically as a modern MSD, but WAY, WAY cooler!

Basics: don't need a power supply to make a spark and cool as hell!

I used to run one on a previous turbo motor ( ex uncle keith) and will be going back to one next year on this! ;D

Woper runs one,

but ive been messing about with the Electromotive crank trigger system and picked up a few mph with it. but not half as sexy as the mag set up.

well done Ken on getting your motor. Be nice to see what it can do.

I've got one on my 2007 but I'll probably use the MSD off my 2276 because I haven't got a clue how it works! (and the 2276 has IDAs, so the mag will look cooler...;))

I think the guy selling those posts on here form time to time. HVWs did an article where they dynoed different engine combos. In one comparison they ran the same engine with a 009 and then a Mag. The difference was only 3-4 hp down low and 0 in the upper rpms. I doubt a mag will help over a MSD/Mallory setup. Me, I plan to run an 010. But yeah, the mag does look cool.

I have a Joe Hunt Magneto on my 2332 I had Joe Hunt Lock the Advance on it, I Like the Look of a Magneto on a VW there is nothing Better Looking Then a VW Motor With IDA's and A Magneto it just Looks Bitchen, I know the MSD's are what A lot of People run these Days they may work good but they look like they belong on a Pinto plus you have to run the Box with them. Magnetos are Simple all you need is an on/off switch  to ground it out to shut the motor off

Darren Dilleys 55 has one of the 'Mag look' distributors. It works well, has an internal coil and is quite a bit lighter than the real deal. I ran an origional Vertex in my 67 for a few years. It looked great. I switched it out because I wanted to run a rev limiter and a two step. The Vertex generated lots of heat also. Sure looked good though. :)

...and team that up with the IDA-look EFI and you've got traditional looks with modern reliability and performance!

I was in contact with the bloke about these, decided against it as the dizzy had to be set-up in  advance and once it was in that was it, no adjustment.

Here are the details:

The units will come polished for 695.00 ea.
If you purchase 2 or more I can reduce the price to 670
a unpolish unit is 30.00 less
I would need to know If you are going to use a msd box or if you just want
 a electronic dizz.
The units have a 20 advance in them.
The units can come with a traditional magneto name plate or with out.
If you want something different I can try to accomodate your needs.
These prices do not include shipping.
 Thanks for the interest

Trying to get the best of both worlds here. The advance is set at 20-22 degrees. sorry it's not
easy to self adjust. comes in at 1200 and fully advance at 2000 rpm. Unit components are all made in usa
the coil is specially made for these units and is the same hi output like an hei coil.
It's all a matter of what you what. Sure the MSD distributor is fully adjustable, but be honest with me, how many average guys out there play withit??  This is the old school look! with todays electronics.
I am currently making some minor improvements such as the rotor will point to number one like on a stock distributor..this was confusing for some when installing it.
any questions I be happy to answer

Here's mine. It's an old scintilla, and I definitely noticed an improvement when I swapped the 009 for it.

It fills up the empty space under the carb nicely.  :)

just out of interest, what advance do you normally set them up for, or do you run them locked out?
