Please keep this one as a Fiat and use it as a base for an Abarth 850TC or 1000TC replica. Looks too good to cut up for another VW-powered car.  >:(

Never thought I'd say anything like that BUT...

Well, im sorry, but thats not gonna happen....and i dont want to spend my (or anyone elses) time discussing "why/why not" in this thread. Feel free to start a discussion in the off-topic area, and i can chime in there. And if someone dont like my idea (even though i havent told yet), dont open this thread again, you might regret..  :-\
That beeing said, i hope you watch anyway, and that you will like the result  :) And at least.. i saved my -55 oval from the angle grinder.

Thanks in advance for not trying to convert me ;D

Not much done since last update (been using my sparetime to tidy up space in my "workshop", sorting tools, fixed a leakinig roof, driving tractors etc etc  ;D)
Still a lot to do with my working space...and the 600 will not be prio 1 yet. I need to do some work to keep the heat inside as its getting colder up here.

Most of the rear is completly cut out though, and a couple of more hours and im close to done... I have startet to make a transmission/axle mockup. Need to be narrowed pretty much.

Here is just another pic.., close to where it will sit when done i think.

Slowly progressing... have been cleaning up the entire rear space inside the car, so its just a big "hole". Getting the roll-bar made in the next few weeks. Will be nice to have that tied in so i can start work on the trans/engine mounts. Thank god i dont have a deadline to have it all finished..haha.
Would be cool to know what it weighs right now, i can move it around like a wheelbarrow :D

Made some mockup axle tubes:

And transmission/wheels roughly lined up:

I have shortened the tubes 5" on both sides, that way i can use the 5" shorter SAW axles (i believe they are still available).
Next thing will be to fabricate the frame for the trans and connect it to the rollbar and the rest of the car. I need to do some thinking......  any input is very much appreciated :)

You are so going to wish that you went IRS -- with such short axles, just a small up/down movement will throw some extreme angles on your tires real quick -- -- look at my build link I posted above for some ideas -- Mark Christensen (he is the guy that did my Fabrication) has built 3 Fiat now and all of them drive very nice

A very soft suspension wouldnt be any good i guess  ::)

On monday i`ll get a quote for a full rollcage. Crossing my fingers it`ll be manageable to afford..

180hp will move this car pretty good :D
Any particular brand coilover you use? I dont think i will spend $750 on RLR (QA1).

How about something like this?

If you measure the travel and to you shock mountings (if you have any) then contact AVO, that's all I did and they work great.

Wopers rear coil over mounts are part of the cage, very simple set up. its been holding his arse up for 39 years so far! lol

Title: Re: Fiat 600
Post by: Fiatdude on July 19, 2013, 03:45:17 am
We used the stock mounting for the spring and used the stock shocks and then went to the local pick a part and found a spring (off some front struts, if I remember right) that was a little beefer and the same radius and then cut to fit for ride height -- -- -- worked beyond OK
<
<

I used a 205/55 drag radial and it hooked well enough to lift the front tires on the street

Thanks man. I might consider smaller tires later..or another set of wheels. Its a bit tight as it sits now, but might work. At least i will have options later. Dont think i will go narrower anyway.

They are the standard CMS/ERCO zero offset fronts -- just done with the Fiat 4x96 pattern (call Walt and he'll make you a pair) -- did have to massage the front caliper with a grinder by about 1/16-1/8" to get them to fit without rubbing (Fiat 124 discs and calipers bolt up to stock 600 stuff) and they worked perfectly and the tires were something we found for sale at one of the bug-ins 155-165 range --

These are Jetta rims at 4x100 that we started with

(http://i586.photobucket.com/albums/ss306/Fiatdude/3-6-082.jpg) (http://s586.photobucket.com/user/Fiatdude/media/3-6-082.jpg.html)

I had Three sets of rims made when I did mine and these are one of the sets on the former Pat McDermitts Fiat now owned by the Borden Family

Some more progress, but not finished yet..
Still a lot of tubeing to do to stiffen it up, and mounts for ladder bars etc, but you might get an idea. Transmission will be detatachable so i can just drop it right down to the ground.

Another mockup with trans and engineblock.

Minor mods needs to be done to the trans mounts (not the cage itself), other than that everything is looking good...so far.
Great thing the cage was made the way it is as it make it possible to do changes later.

I need some advice regarding leveling the engine and trans correct. I have to do some adjustments to the brackets thats holding the package before i can proceed to next step.
What places on the engine block and/or transmission is usable when bolted together??

Just a pic..

Level side to side was done with a level -- -- level front to rear was done by what what looked "right" with the car and engine setting on the ground -- It doesn't have to be perfect, just what works for you -- you're not planning on doing any 24 hour endurance races are you???

I should follow your advice... and i think im almost done. Bougth a cheap laser-lever, and everything looks pretty spot on now. Just need to fill, and re-drill a couple of holes.

Laser mockup  ;D

Thanks, yes some progress, but no pics at the moment... been too busy and forgot to take pics. Will update some time soon.
I got my axles from Finland. SAW have also made them, but not many for sale as i have seen. Was a pair for sale on UAC a while back though..maybe they are still available.
