That has held up remarkably well for a 20 year old resto! Mine really could do with doing again after 18 years, and its had a repaint a few years back too!

Nice results! Give us some stats please. How many miles in those 20 years? Has it been on the road every year? Has it had any engine work done since the original build?
Recently I rebuilt the engine in my wife's 65 which I originally built in 1999 and it has some 50,000 miles on it. Top end redone and good to go! (the 88 machine-in bores were oval). ;D

It has about 60,000 miles since rebuilt. I freshened up my 1904 originally, but it has quite a lot of miles and at 94,000 it let go.

I replaced it with a 2180 that now has about 40k on it.

I also found 2 broken spider gears so I had the Berg 5 repaired and a ZF LSD installed.

It was featured in Hot VW when Gary Berg explained the updated oiling modification.

Good info, I like to see how things hold up over the years. 40k on it now and how is the transmission shifting, better than the previous build after that many miles?
And how is the engine holding up? Have you done a compression check lately? (it's good to check for a baseline number when the build is new)
I was shocked at how worn out my 1679 was after that many miles! I think it was the Berg low CR tune it was in, yuck.

To tell you the truth... it runs great and I don't stress over the numbers. When it stops running great, i'll figure out what the problem is and fix it.

I also keep detailed records, but unless there's an issue, i just drive it.

6 years ago I got into cycling so most of my spare time is spent riding and much less driving the VW. But, when I want to go for a drive, i quick twist of the key and it starts right up.

Switched to Subaru 18 months ago. Then 2 week ago I got hit by a municipal garbage truck and pushed into a Ford F150.

Walked away without a scratch.

Got a new one 4 days later.
