Title: oil filter - pressure relief valve
Post by: Glauco on November 04, 2022, 09:25:42 am
I have a question about oil filters.
I have a K&N HP-3001 filter and it states that the PSI relief valve works from 8-11 psi. what does this mean? that everything above 11 psi opens the relief valve?
If I understand this correctly it means that my filter hardly filters anything because the pressure is always to high?
I looked at the WIX 51515r and it states the same.

can somebody explain it to me please, because I'm sure I'm seeing it wrong...?

I came across this because I was looking for a lower filter because my merged dqp hits the filter and I have no room to place it elsewhere.. and all the lower K&N filters have a pressure relief valve that operates at 11-17psi, not sure if that will work..

thank you,
Glauco

this is the delta pressure over the filter, not the absolute oil pressure value.
The valve opens when the delta pressure is too high (meaning the filter material is defect or completely filled with dirt). It prevents the filter from bursting.

Some good filters
VW type 4 filter or VW wbx (MAN filter)
Then you can also use volvo penta filters
Wix 51515 r works well
There have been many problems with Fram / K&N that the filter mass collapses at high pressures (cold oil)

Thank you for the explanation! That makes perfect sense...
Might get a new filter just to be sure.

is there a lower man filter used on the type4 engine? I see that there are MAN filters that are about half the size of the FRAM HP1. does anyone know the type for one that is half the hight but just as good?

why should you have large filters?
It is what is on the inside of the filter that decides
All HP filters are less filtering mass because it should flow better as well

I think I said it wrong... I actually was asking for a smaller filter that still flows good.

if it needs a earlier or quicker replacement, that doesn't bother me at this point.
