Temporary engine fitted to a friend of mines looker.
It's a 1600 fitted with a very light flywheel, 44 DCNF's on race-trim manifolds, magneto and a merged header with double quiet pack.

This engine really benefitted from mounting the magneto and now drives really good for a "stock" 1600!

On a Small Motor like that with all that fuel going in you need a Magneto to burn the fuel  that motor with a Dist. would most likely foul a spark plug or load up real bad. dose it have stock heads and cam?

That's exactly what it did! It could use some bigger heads , cam, and higher c/r, but it's only a temporary engine and it's allready fun to drive as is.

Turn it by hand, and see if it still has spark. Be carefull. Wink Use copper core wires and non- resistant connectors. Take off or isolate the metal thing that shorts out the rotor and thus limits the rpm.

Can someone please explain to me why the magneto is so much better on a small engine as opposed to on a big one(and to using a distributor)? I have read several places that the magneto works great, but that there is no point in installing one unless you want it because of the look, or you need it because the lack of battery in the car.

A magneto works good on any engine, big or small, doesn't matter.
It generates it's own power, so the higher the rpms, the bigger the spark.
I noticed a big difference compared to the 009 I ran before.
But it's an old design, it's heavy, and it wil ask a little extra power from the engine to turn over. So yes, today's modern electronic ignition systems probably work equally good, but they're not my cup of tea.
