Try Buena Park, super nice aera and very close to Orange County. Last year we stayed at Radisson hotel
in Buena Park and was VERY happy with it. I'll book a room there next time too.  Call them and ask for
a good price copared to hotels.com or expedia.com.

What is it you're looking for? A hotel in the area?

yes newport and huntington are more exspensive. Buena Park is one of the most centrally located to what you want to do, real close to nicks, maybe 15 miles from the beach, disneyland, knotts berry farm, OCTO are all only minutes away. i'll pm some local hotels in a bit

At the intersection of 55 and Dyer Rd are a La Quinta Inn, Best Western and a Embassy Suites -- in Santa Ana -- real central location -- all are real nice

I stayed below for the classic last year, about 7 days. Close to the freeways, beach, Trader Joes (nice grocery store), lots of food options in walking distance. It was also easy to access the different classic events navigation wise.

I second the Best Western recommendation. Every one we have ever stayed in was reasonably priced, clean and well kept.
Some are more like a motel than others with walk-out parking which I like (I hate big Hotels and walking down those long narrow halls on the 10th floor trying to find my room!)
There are a few in or near the OC...

Dana Point Marina Inn.  Inexpensive hotel, at Dana Point harbor, 20 minutes to santa ana, 1 hour to san diego.  food and shops close by and on the coast.
