Title: CB-shadek with IN- OUT
Post by: banditina on September 03, 2009, 08:58:04 am
I finished assembling the engine, but I have a problem! Oil pump (cb perf) does not work, it's unable to reach pressure...
I bought a shadek pump, Can you tell me if it is a good product?
 could depend on what?

did you ensure you had no air trapped in it.  i.e. crank over on the starter with the filter off so that there is oil in all the lines?

not wanting to pick on their pump, but I used one once, and will never again, because of priming problems. I tried one in my ex-g/f Type III because of space limitation. ALWAYS had issues with oil light staying on, after fireup.

sorry  :-\

I had one that the gear that runs off cam spun on the shaft, That was fun trying to figure out

I elieve that all CB pumps driven gears are secured by a woodruff key on the shaft?

as lids says, but the way i primed the system was to leave the return to the case draining into a bowl stopping every couple of cranks to check the level, did you pre-fill the cooler? ;D

did you grease/vaseline the gears when you fitted them? I've always found this really helps to suck/build up pressure quick on fire-up.

Same here. Did you ensure that the pumpshaft goes enough into the camgear ? You can heat the shaft up and drive it thru.( and measure up).
My 2 cents are for original Shadecks/ Bergs.

also is the pump oil return plugged in the pump or case, this will also cause a problem.

I don't like the idea of a pump with an inlet and outlet built right into the same cover.  Seems like a ridiculously inefficient design, in my opinion.

No, I just saw inefficient. Someone told my customer that he could just put a flat, stock cover plate on his Shadek full flow pump. It actually drove about 8 miles before a rod bearing went away!

My 2 cents is that I never liked those in/out pump covers. i have used them on rare occasions, when a customer supplied one. But never on hi reving (6K +) engines. I use the filter pump version every once in a while. But do check and modify slightly every time too. And again never on high reving engines.

I have used the CB in and out for over ten years with no issues. Started my old 1915 last night and oilpreassure came right up. One tricky part is that the paper gasket to keep preassure from leaking back into the pump is so thin that its easily damaged. The actuall pump is fine but the return into the pump is thin line between failure and sucsess. I did surface mine and cut down on the axial play and it instantly worked better. Could be that the gasket is a bit on the thick side. Once everything is working, preasure is preasure even if you dont like the pump.

you talk about COVER paper gasket?
