Title: Hilborn mechanical fuel injection
Post by: Kiwi on September 16, 2009, 20:43:56 pm
Couple of questions, Hilborn mechanical fuel injection with the tall stacks. Now the look is nice, but I understand that they are not useable on street use as they have little or no driveabilty on part throttle.
Can a electronic system be used to run it?

That would be cool. I don't see why you couldn't, but I'm no fuel injecton expert by a longshot ;)

I'm fairly sure that there is a Hilborn style EFI system for V8s. I seem to rememer reading about it in Street Rodder or something like that.

yeah you can use it on the street, just take a little dialing in ;)

They sell a boss to weld into the manifolds for new type fuel injectors - can be made to run on the street.

The answer is yes...you can convert the old HILBORNE to run on the street. I have a lot of V8 buddies who have done it.  As one stated, it takes a little more dialing in as you won't have a mass air flow sensor but you can use other controls to fatten up or lean out the fuel curve with a programmable unit controlling the injectors.

Totally streetable -- Have had them on V8's, VW's and motorcycles and drove them all on the street

It is Hilborn not Hilborne.

I've been running it for a couple years now on methanol. There are certain valves you can employ to clean up the midrange and idle, but be prepared to use a lot of fuel.

I got this system pretty close in just a few races. I burned a few sets of plugs along the way, re-engineered the total fuel delivery scheme, but I'm pretty happy with it now.
