Title: MSD distributor timing help
Post by: reijo5 on September 27, 2009, 18:52:41 pm
Ok i was gonna set my msd distributor to 30 deg @ 3000 rpm +  like a 009 , but it has the heavy  silver spring s in so full advance is not going to be in till over 5000 rpm also i checked to see which adv stop was in , expecting to see the blue one as
i have a bag with the other springs /stops in and the blue was nt in the bag , but it was not blue just lightly rusted :D ( lovin the uk climate) but it looked only slightly smaller than the black stopand larger than the silver so maybe it used to be blue ? if i remove and measure what size should it be?  so what should it be set at ? its a 2276 130 cam 48 idas timms stage 2 heads  ,
and also are the big silver springs and blue advance stop right for this set up ? this is how i bought it.
Thanks for any help

jamie

Thanks bang , what rpm do you get full advance with that ? does cc make a difference to how you should set up your springs/stop  ???

You will probably want it to be fully advanced at somewhere between 2600-3000rpm, and the advance should START roughly 50-100rpms ABOVE your idlespeed ( a lot of people have their advance and idle speed mixed together, and this will result in bad idle). A good starting point would be a 20degree total advance (10-30 degrees - or similar). You will have to fine tune it to your engine, but at least this will get you started.

Luckily a spring change is quickly done on a msd distributor, so you should have it set up fairly quick.

Avoid detonation - Good luck  ;)

on msd homepage you can see what the springs does and the adwance stop. i set mine up so it starts at 1500 rpm and stops at 2800 rpm.
and it it set on 28 degrees at full adwavce.
my engine is a 2779ccm with 12,6: 1 in compresion.
