Title: Name that tool Post by: kingsburgphil on September 29, 2009, 06:17:19 am This is where the gray beards get to see if any of the "youngin's" can identify an old VW tool. No Google searches please, either you know it or you don't.
And no old dudes either, since you've probably worn out this tool twice over. Title: Re: Name that tool Post by: Wünderwolff on September 29, 2009, 06:58:11 am To me it looks like the tool you use to get the greasecaps off of the front drums. Never understood why you would use such a big tool I just use a screwdriver and a hammer :P
And if it is not that (it is hard to judhe the size without a reference) it might well be a flywheel puller. Title: Re: Name that tool Post by: ian c on September 29, 2009, 13:50:17 pm Dr.
there is a ruler under it on the picture !! ;D i think its the specialist extraction tool for when you dropped your crack-pipe and it fell under the seat and got wedged in the seat rail . i also have a picture i will add later , as i'm clearing out my garage back in england and have found a bent rusty thing .. its definately a vw tool , but i havent got a fricken clue what it is !!! Title: Re: Name that tool Post by: kingsburgphil on September 29, 2009, 16:08:16 pm In all fairness to the Dr., the vernier caliper was not in the original photo. I replaced the photo after he correctly commented on the lack of a reference
measurement. My mistake not his. Now I'm sure there's an old codger out there with an obscure VW tool, who's just itching to play "stump the kiddies". and no, I didn't say "stomp the kitties"....knuckleheads! :D Title: Re: Name that tool Post by: danny gabbard on September 29, 2009, 16:26:53 pm Is it for vw repairs ? It looks like a puller or sometype of clip compressor of sometype, But that would be to ez.
Title: Re: Name that tool Post by: Speed-Randy on September 29, 2009, 20:56:13 pm I would like to name it "jimbo" if nobody has any objections

Title: Re: Name that tool Post by: danny gabbard on September 30, 2009, 19:11:32 pm Let me know if the tools are getting old! Kinda my hot button
Title: Re: Name that tool Post by: jick on September 30, 2009, 22:51:30 pm nice looking workshop Danny....do you rate a particular brand of hammers/dollies over any others ?
Title: Re: Name that tool Post by: danny gabbard on October 01, 2009, 00:14:19 am Some are old proto, when they made nice hammers. Some are snap-on that I tuned on heavilly. Most of all that stuff I found used and reworked to my needs.
Title: Re: Name that tool Post by: Jim Ratto on October 01, 2009, 00:57:54 am is it for door hinge pins Phil? Or somethign to do with torsion leaves in beam? I'm stumped.
Title: Re: Name that tool Post by: Tony M on October 01, 2009, 01:20:53 am Is it for compressing valve springs to remove the keepers ?
Dannys tools - English wheel, punch press, the other one is for hammering metal ? PS nice work shop. Title: Re: Name that tool Post by: kingsburgphil on October 01, 2009, 01:33:35 am Since none of the young guys have identified this tool, its time for a seasoned citizen to nail it. So have at it. Ok, so I guess I get the gold star today.Rather than use a big pair of Channelock pliers, this tool compresses the clamps that secure the front sway bar to the lower trailing arms. Once in place you have two hands to install the retaining clip, did I use it very often?, looks tell everything. Good guess's guys, now it's your turn to show us that weird old VW tool that showed up missing at the VW dealer, and you bought at the swap meet. wink wink nod nod :D :D Title: Re: Name that tool Post by: javabug on October 01, 2009, 02:17:03 am Just as impressive as the tools, is the thought of having the skills to put them to use! Much respect and envy to you guys.
Title: Re: Name that tool Post by: kingsburgphil on October 01, 2009, 04:55:10 am This one should be a little easier.
Title: Re: Name that tool Post by: Rick Sadler on October 01, 2009, 06:01:39 am Looks like the wrench that holds the top engine mounting bolt on the early models (before the half moon type bolt) if it is, I think they used to have a magnet inside so you the bolt was held in place while you started the nut in the engine compartment.

You nailed it! This is an early product from Paul "Schley Products", the chain is there to "hang down" and remind me not to leave it on the car. Paul has been a longtime and generous friend, which reminds me I should touch bases with him next time I'm in OC.
