Title: Minimum deck?
Post by: TexasTom on October 05, 2009, 23:18:01 pm
What is the absolute minumum piston to head clearance you've successfully run?
I usually look for .040" as minimum, but considering the possibility of less for a limited time.

82 X 94, carrillo rods, compression in the 10.5-11:1 range.

I was told by a good source that no less than .040. I've ran a ZERO deck with a .040 copper head gasket with no problem on my 2303 a few years back.

There's no one-size-fits-all for the minimum deck height you can run.  The min depends on many factors.  Stroke, rod journal, main journal, connecting rods, cylinders are all just a few of what determines how tight you can go.
A 69 stroke VW journal can take much tighter DH than an 84 stroke Chevy journal crank.
Using Pauter aluminium rods?  You'll never get away with 1mm of DH.

Bruce,
I agree completely ...
The stroke is 82 (Okrasa) with Carrillo rods, 5.352". ;)

What are your journals?  Chevy?  VW?
Mains: Type 1 or 4?

It has type 1 mains, Bruce.

Good components, but old school as they say; Okrasa, Berg, Fumio and the like.

Think I'll stick the .040" rule ...  ;)
