Title: Buggy Tire combo
Post by: louisb on October 13, 2009, 21:05:30 pm
What do you guys think of this tire combo? The rears are 31" I think which may be hard to do with stock gearing, 4.12 and a 1914. I am trying to decide if I want to go with a more off road look or stick with the 225R70-15s which are 27" tall for the Manx. My main concern with the rear tire size is being able to drive it at freeway speeds.

Thanks,

Cool setup! ;)
The buggy's probably light enough to get away with it on the street. Don't know about with the trailer aty highway speeds though ... what cam are ya runnin?

That's not mine and I wont be pulling a trailer. (Though I wish I had one.) The cam I picked is some where between a w-110 and w-120. (Web cam 163)

I am guessing the engine will be somewhere around 100 - 110 HP maybe.

Edit: I could go with a 4.37 R&P instead of the 4.12 maybe. Tranny goes to be rebuilt week after next so I am trying to decide what to do.

Looks too cool right now. I would not change tires, but i like the off road look.  Nice buggy.

Here are some specs:

4.12 w/ .89 4th @ 65

27" tire = 2966 rpm
30" tire = 2669 rpm

4.37 w/ .89 4th @ 65

27' = 3146 rpm
30" = 2831 rpm

MPH & RPM Vs Gears (4.12 x 3.80, 2.08, 1.31, 0.89 w/30" Tire )

RPM13   4
10005.510.0 15.8 23.3
15008.215.0 23.7 35.0
200010.9 19.9  31.746.6
250013.6 24.9 39.658.3
3000 16.4  29.9 47.5 69.9
3500 19.1  34.9  55.481.6
400021.8 39.9  63.3  93.2
450024.6  44.9   71.2  104.9
5000 27.349.979.2116.5
5500
redline
30.0  54.8 87.1 128.2

MPH & RPM Vs Gears (4.38 x 3.80, 2.08, 1.31, 0.89 w/30" Tire )

RPM1   234
10005.19.4 14.9   21.9
15007.7   14.122.332.9
200010.3 18.8 29.8 43.8
250012.8   23.437.254.8
3000  15.428.144.7   65.8
3500 18.0 32.852.1 76.7
400020.5  37.5   59.6 87.7
4500 23.1  42.267.098.6
500025.746.974.5  109.6
5500
redline
28.2 51.6 81.9  120.6

Looking at the charts I am thinking it might be better to go with the 4.38 if I go with a 30" tire. My concern is will the motor be able to go up a grade in 4th at highway speeds, how peppy will this combo be around town and will it pull at least 65 in 4th. The rpms @ 65 do not look that bad.

Thanks,

4.12 w 1.48/1.04 3rd & 4th!  ;)

lol, that would do the trick. But I am trying to stick with stock gears to keep the cost down. I can use either a 4.12 or a 4.38 with no cost difference. Other tranny mods will be a wleded 3 & 4 and a super dif.

If you stick with the 31s on the rear, I'd be tempted to go with the 4.375 r&p.

On the other hand, how much does that thing weigh, 1200 lbs.?

I like the T bucket look on Manxs

big wide squarish tires on the rear and 145's up front.

That is more of a pro street look. I like those too, just not what I want to do with this buggy. Now go look at the gearing chart I posted above and give me your thoughts on that.  ;D

you know my thoughts dude  ;)

- 165/80's up front (stock vw so the speedo is right)
and
- 225/70's out the back (good acceleration and good rpm and good highway driving)

BUT remember keep the pressures LOW otherwise you have a buggy that drive like a bag of CR&P!!!!!!

 :)

Yeah I should probably just KISS and quit getting off on tangents. This buggy is already headed way over budget.

see I do talk some sence - only sometimes  ;)

Plus 31" tires is ALOT of rubber/weight to be turning - it will take it's toll on the trans/motor :)

I think those look like crap. I like the original Manx look of street tires on wide white steelies and hubcaps. Those modern off road tires are way too big and knobby looking. And shoudl`nt this be in the off topic forum?

Anyway, moving forward...

Louis, to answer your question really depends on what terrain you plan on driving your car on. If you're going off-roading... great. Leave it alone. But if you're going to be driving mostly paved streets, I'd switch those out for some street tires. It's your car... long as you're happy with it.

Thanks for the input form everyone. I have decided to go back to my original plan and run 165R15s front and 225/70R15s rear.

Thanks,

Louis, with a street tire set you can run easy off-rod too.

I wouldn't want the howling and gowling of those knobby off road tires.

Heres a shot of NOS Meyers Manx before I sold it. (I still regret having to do that). 3 1/2 and 6 1/2 Centerlines with 165`s and 235/60`s. I was actually going tun 145`s and 205/70`s but was going to Cal look it with a dropped front end. Anyway, it was a good fit with these tires and wheels. Man, just looking up this picture on The Samba hurts me...

Yep, long as you're not planning to hit the sand, mud, or soft stuff... you'll be fine with some part time off-roading.

I wouldn't want the howling and gowling of those knobby off road tires.

True, that.

That is awesome. Cage and an IDA motor and that would be ideal. ;)
