Title: Position of Lucas indicators?
Post by: lowfastbus on January 28, 2007, 20:14:40 pm
What do you think of this for the position of Lucas indicators?
Welded up a 68-72 1200 fender to transform a european 67 to us look...
Some pics of the fender and the car it's coming on.

Put it where you think it looks right, thats all that matters :)

I guess you're right, it all up to personal taste's

looks good to me -but i think the best way to tell if it's a good position is by fitting those fenders to a car and have a look at the whole front

Will be trying it on my 67 next week, will show soon....

On an early fender it usually goes in place of the horn grilles.

Nice 67 Jelle!

Take a look at other rides, i think they look perfect on the black bitch for example.

Or ask Kurt to do a little measuring  ;)

Mine are fitted in in place of the horn grills.

Title: Re: Position of Lucas indicators?
Post by: lowfastbus on January 28, 2007, 22:55:05 pm
I like 'm on the place off the horn grils on a bumper car, without bumpers I would place them lower...

Title: Re: Position of Lucas indicators?
Post by: lowfastbus on January 28, 2007, 23:08:16 pm
Look at the red dots, for the position of the indicators... I like them better on the left car...

Title: Re: Position of Lucas indicators?
Post by: Diederick/DVK on January 28, 2007, 23:13:52 pm
nice line you drew, certainly makes sense!
but i'd personally never run them with bumpers (and i've never seen them with bumpers)

the ones on the left look good! but don't go a tad lower or it will look odd!

lower is kind of cool...

I Remember Installing those Buggy Bumpers see how the back sits up more closer to the car we used to heat them and bend the tubes to get them to fit right then weld straps on them to mount them the rear was hard to mount  because the bumper has to fit between the Rear apron and the QP muffler But I like them when there mounted right the rear looks funny if you dont  heat it and bend it so it sits more upright like the picture  look at the angle of the rear Buggy Bumper Verses the front Buggy Bumper angle.

My suggestion to figure out where to install your Lucas 488s, is to take a photo, or Xerox of a Lucas lens with ring and seal, cut it out around the edge, and use that as a paste up against your fender/wing. Tape it on, stand back, and move it around until you have it right....

I had originally stuck the lens to the wing in various positions with blue tack....... :D
Eventually settled on position in pic - 40mm in from wing beading & top edge of indicator lines up with bottom of headlamp mounting.
As said elsewhere in this thread, its down to personal taste.
Now to weld my wings up :)

Here is where I mounted mine. Took a while to make the positioning look symetrical to the eye. I just made templates with tape and kept repositioning them until I liked where they were.

Hi Brian,

They look spot on. Can you tell me if your wings are genuine US Spec 67 wings or the later 68 on. I am looking to replace my wings and will be using lucas 488's but have been told the 67 wings are different to the later ones in shape, thus this will effect the position of the indicators.  Thanks

Yes, that is true. The headlights can be located slightly higher and wider than an OEM German '67 Fender/wing, so beware.

Straight time, My fenders are actually fiberglass. They are from US spec 67 molds so the geometry is fairly close. I compared the fenders measurements to the originals and they were almost spot on. I did have to fabricate the headlamp buckets and brackets to get the headlamps where they were supposed to be but other than that it went smoothly.
