Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: speedwell on October 21, 2009, 21:42:51 pm have this too ;)
Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: RobtheManx on October 21, 2009, 21:53:13 pm Yeah Yeah I know the rear wheels are 4 bolt , but they look so much better if five .
Yes I have the article too , Paul Schley found Denny Grove's number for me , I called him a few months ago to talk to him about the car . He said he hadn't even thought about it in twenty years , and was a little shocked that some dude in England is building a replica of a car he drove for six months and crashed nearly fourty years ago . Lots of sign writing left to do , and got to figure out how to do the lacework on the wings . hopefully ready for next Bug In Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: speedwell on October 21, 2009, 21:58:52 pm Yeah Yeah I know the rear wheels are 4 bolt , but they look so much better if five . It was not the criticism ;), just that I had never paid attention on it :D Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: Jamie on October 21, 2009, 22:01:24 pm 8)

Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: Neil Davies on October 22, 2009, 09:54:58 am Rob, I'll try to dig through some old Custom Car Magazines. My Dad has virtually the first five years of complete issues, and I seem to remember a lace painting article in there somewhere! It might take some time... ::) :D
Basically though, it involved masking up the shape on the panel, a lace curtain taped onto it, and spraying though! :o Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: simon uk on October 22, 2009, 10:43:51 am looks cool! there is something dodgy to me about building a replica of a crashed car, almost like tempting fate or something!

Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: jick on October 22, 2009, 14:17:09 pm great looking car dude....i've always thought that was super-cool car,
you should search on the Jalopy Journal HAMB forum for lace painting....there's loads of info not to mention amazing work going on. Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: jick on October 22, 2009, 14:24:13 pm a little inspiration for you....

Si. Don't say that , Denny told me how scary it was crashing the original , he crashed Ned Bug 2 as well . He gave up with VWs altogether after that . Any way most Gasser replicas are built because the originals crashed . The Lace work shouldn't be too hard , just can't decide wether to flat the laquer , do the lace in base coat , and then re-laquer . Or just do it over the top , so you can feel it . Rob Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: Fritter on October 22, 2009, 18:54:48 pm Very cool! One of my favorite gassers, the Dds connection is very cool.
Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: nicolas on October 22, 2009, 19:34:11 pm nice car to make a replica off.
the car looks good as well, hope to see it someday down the track. Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: chopperdentist on October 22, 2009, 19:35:18 pm The Lace work shouldn't be too hard , just can't decide wether to flat the laquer , do the lace in base coat , and then re-laquer . Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: RobtheManx on October 22, 2009, 20:07:21 pm Hi Davide , how are you ?
Some times the lacework was done over the top , like the sign writing , these were only race cars and the paintwork was never that great . As long as they look good from a distance . Did you do the lacework on your bike ? I love your bike by the way . Rob Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: Lee.C on October 22, 2009, 22:13:31 pm nice car to make a replica off. the car looks good as well, hope to see it someday down the track. I'm trying to get him to take it to SCC ;) Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: Russell on October 22, 2009, 23:54:38 pm Rob
Very Very cool, right up my street.... Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: chopperdentist on October 23, 2009, 12:49:57 pm Hi Rob, nice to see your last project. It's great!!!
I'm ok, thanks. I have some problems with my Manx. but just easy problem because it's all new!! Here are some pics of my bike tank. Capitan Blaster is the painter. he flaked my manx too. He is great with pinstriping, leteering and every kind of old school paint. on my tank he put a silver layer at the base than paint the lacework in dark, and than paint everythink in candy blue with the laquer on the top. I know what you mean, for example lettering and pinstriping ar better without the laquer on top. but using laquer on candy colors you increase the deep effect. Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: flatfire on October 24, 2009, 10:55:39 am Cool project, a great choice. I always wondered after seeing the picture in the first cal look book why a replica hadn't been built.
I have already built it several times in my own mind ;D Good luck, looking forward to seeing it in the flesh Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: Harry/FDK on October 25, 2009, 21:57:11 pm Damn Rob, Fantastic project. Don't let the Mexican Flue Folks hold you down. (cough, cough).

Unless you would like to sell your copy ?
Thanks , Rob Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: Lids on November 07, 2009, 12:13:28 pm if anybody read my reply you would know that it would have to be in a mag after July 1971, as that was when the picture was taken.

gr Wout Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: RobtheManx on June 06, 2011, 19:26:02 pm Rag Rolled !
I ended up using One Shot lettering enamel , sprayed on with an airbrush , then filled the gun with thinners and quickly dusted over it , and then used a plastic bag to roll and crease the paint . It needs a polish and maybe some laquer , but I'm pretty happy so far. Rob Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: RobtheManx on June 06, 2011, 19:27:25 pm Ned Bug and garage buddies

Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: RobtheManx on April 30, 2013, 09:28:38 am Crikey , nearly 2 years since my last reply on this thread and I have finally made a full pass under power in the Bug !
Nice and gentle on the launch , and through the gears and it went 12.80 . The car went really straight and feels like there is plenty more to go . Got some jobs to do now before EBI , the slicks are rubbing on the fenders due to the long race axles ( they were cheap second hand ) . Also the tacho has stopped working , and also need to raise the rear suspension a little . Cheers , Rob Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: Lee.C on April 30, 2013, 14:17:18 pm AMAZING ;D
Seriously impressed buddy - now come and race in norway ;) Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: Rocket Ron on January 17, 2014, 21:02:54 pm Hi folks
Ned bug is now down south, a Rob was kind enough to sell the Ned bug to me at the tail end of last year Nearly 18 years after seeing he original in the cal look bible the replica is tucked up near home Rob has made a great job of capturing the feeling and essence of the original and I'm grateful of his dedication to producing a great car Hopefully it will be making appearances at Drag day and Gary's picnic and a few other events if time allows See you at the strip Regards Ron. Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: Lee.C on January 17, 2014, 23:10:15 pm well was only "thinking" about coming over for Drag Day but now I will make a point of coming.......
For one reason and another I have NEVER seen this car run :-\ :) What engine is going in it ??? Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: RobtheManx on January 27, 2014, 21:27:22 pm Hi Ron , thanks for your kind words about the car . I miss it , workshop doesn't look right without it ! and its a shame I never really got round to running it properly , just a couple of low 12's , it had a lot more to give .
The motor is now in the buggy , so I'll look forward to a race at Drag Day . I'd love to race you in the Plymouth at Gary's Picnic too , wouldn't mind being beaten by my old bug ! Any pictures of work you've been doing ? Cheers , Rob Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: Rocket Ron on January 27, 2014, 22:56:18 pm Hi rob
Thanks again for sending the bits No photos as I've not done much with the old girl just tucked her up for winter Be great to race at Gary's, hopefully it'll be a bit dryer and warmer by then Regards Ron Title: Re: Ned Bug Post by: stretch on January 28, 2014, 09:50:28 am Congrats on the purchase Ron. :)
That car is absolutely fantastic, the job that Rob did on it was incredible. Your a lucky man. I'd love to race you at the drag day or Gary's Picnic, i'd like to have a photo of my car next to yours on the startline. |
