Title: What did you get for free?
Post by: Donny B. on October 27, 2009, 22:46:02 pm
Over time we've all gotten stuff that somebody else decided to get rid of.  I got a German 009 for free from a friend that didn't want it.  A little over a year ago a neighbor bought this sand rail from a friend.  The friend threw in a bunch of stuff he wanted to get rid of.  The engine for the sand rail had been put together over 10 years ago and just sat, never run.  Most of the other stuff was from the same time frame.  My neighbor didn't want the extra stuff after he got the sand rail going and asked if I wanted it.  I said sure.  I got two short blocks and one very dirty engine case.  I also got some rusty rods and engine studs and about 3 power pulleys (never used).  Well I hauled the stuff home in a wheel barrow and it sat for almost a year.

...so a couple of weeks ago I decided I needed to do something in the garage for a change and tore into one of the short blocks.  It was pretty sad with the case having the thrust cut .080 and the mains .060.  The stock crank was .020 under.  This was all pretty much what I expected.  The next day I decided to take the other stuff apart.  One case was just filthy so I started scraping the crud off of it.  It took a couple of hours and I had a pile of oily dirt in the driveway.  I checked the case and it looked like it hadn't been cut so I torqued the center main to about 10 ft/lbs and no gap.  It turns out it is a German '73 or '74 case and should clean up with the first line bore.  I thought that was cool so I started on the other short block.  I hadn't paid any attention to any of this stuff in a long while.  I noticed the other short block had a counterweighted crank so I tore into it.  All of the oil galleys had been tapped for threaded plugs, but none were there.  I split the case and found a 76 cast counterweighted crank.  All of the bearings were brand new and never run.  The lifters were stuck in the case with a now very thick moly grease.  After cleaning the lifters they appear to be an old set of new Weisman lifters.  The cam is a Dial in (it says that on the cam gear) with four bolts securing the gear.

So I'm feeling pretty good now and wondering why I took so long to check this stuff out.  What have you gotten for free from someone that just didn't want it anymore?  There must be some cool finds out there...

I got a brand new Mexican case bored, stroked, shuffle pinned, the works, back in 1989 from Sheep. Built my first stroker with it. Got my real Empi wheel from Sheep too.

set of dusty but otherwise good set of Kadrons from Chef Joseph. Went on my 88 x 69 in my bus.

how about posting what we've given away?

Not for free, but for (2) 540MB hard drives that I salvaged out of 2 old PCs that were going in the trash.

A friend found them at a auto parts store that closed and didn't know what they were but knew they were German and that I might want them. I doubt he paid more than a few dollars for them.

Did I get taken?  ;)

Donny B gave me a 1971 sedan almost 10 years ago.  An 88 year old man in central Phoenix gave me a set of early popouts and a kitten, for talking to him about his 62 sedan that he ownedd since new.  Bryan67 gave me a German front fender.

Many things are free. As for Cal Look and VW items... there are far too many to list. So I'll eat my popcorn, drink my Guinness, and see what stuff some of you received.

Carry on.

HAHA!! Good one, vdubkid.

Just on this car alone:

Bosch .009 (German)
1 pr. of tires
oil filler-breather
VW factory connecting rods
VW counter weighted/balanced crankshaft
stock flywheel
1700 lb. Kennedy pressure plate

Plus the many items from over the three decades of owning VW cars. Guess it helps that I've given stuff to people, as well.

Next? (say, Bryan... perhaps you could post and/or contribute something positive)

The AS21 case that is now my 2110.

I guess technically my Empi Riverside wheel, but not sure if it is really "mine."  I'll probably offer to return it when I'm done using it.   :D

Donny has sent me a few things. Set of early pedals that are now destined for the Manx, set of bearing covers, some window rubbers. I have gotten a 009 and a couple of fenders from others as well. The fact that people are willing to give to help out a fellow veeduber is one of the things that make this hobby so great.

Not aircooled but last year I got a 1800GT SciroccoII for free.
In very good driveable condition, did a minor repair to the front seat sliding system and it was done!

Yust a Seat:

When I got this I didn`t really know what type of seat it is.

The pre owner had moved with all his stuff many times and wanted to get rid of it. He was more into Scirocco II.
He knew I was into old stuff so he gave it to me.
The oddest thing is that he had learned as a mechanic at porsche. So he should have known how a Porsche RS seat looks like  ;)

When I got it I was a student, so it was sold to benefit other car realated things...

When I was in hig school, some lady gave me a very rusty '74 Sun Bug super beetle that had a 40 horse engine with a rod knock. I removed the roof rack, the battery the shifter knob, an 019 distiributor as well as the distributor and abandoned the shell by the side of the road.

I just received a set of Solex Kadrons, air cleaner cages and dual port manifolds from a friend. He got them for free and now they're mine. ;D

I will need a linkage and single port manifolds and that might be difficult..... :-\

I was always bringing my Beetle over to my friend's house, as he had a pit that was helpful for changing tranny fluid, etc.  One day the neighbour drops by, with an old Beetle aftermarket parts catalogue that he thought I might like to have.  It's dated 8-67 and is complete with no missing pages...even has the $1.00 catalogue refund coupon for the first purchase of parts:

I got a stock gearbox for free the other week, complete drum to drum, with the rear cradle and a set of virtually new rubber mounts. Not Cal Look in the slightest, but useful anyway! :D

gave away a very early berg linkage to a friend who helped me out with my 57 single cab. Got a great early 70's picture in frame of an old commercial bus in a tyrecentre, this was the original picture signed by the photographer and probably used for advertisment.

A year ago I got a 1970 Deluxe bay window from a friend for free  ;)  Catch is he burned it near to the ground and it had no title  ::)
My grandpa also gave me a good as41 case, NOS 87mm pistons, a good unturned crank, rebuilt 041 heads, bearings, rods.  I've also gotten some vintage bikes for free too.
