i know people have modified j tubes into heat exchangers.can anyone follow this up with pictures please.they obviously wont give as much heat as proper heat exchangers but will take the chill off an interior for extra usage in the colder months.thanks in advance ;D

cheers fabs.im presuming that they slice round the original heat exchanger and fit it to the merged j tube.the inerds of the heat exchanger wont fit though?

I'm sure someone does big bore heat exchangers with flange outlets but i cant remember were I saw them :-[ sorry

ssp do the flanged bigbore exchangers ron but only in an 1inch and 3/8s which i dont think is big enough for a 2276 motor size ???

Not that it would work as well as the system Fabs showed on the Bergler, but an adapted non fresh air 40hp heater system,  is another option. This was the type of heater system Keith Goss built for his '62 chop top.
Any photos of that Fabs?

Unless you see a challenge in making them yourself, there is no need. CSP makes them in 1½, 1 5/8" , 1 3/4" and even 1 7/8".

Real men build heater boxes themselves! But if you must, go ahead and buy them.... ;)

Yeah, but that costs $$$$! :o Tiger does great work from what I've seen though. Did you order yours with the coating? My homemade ones didn't turn out totally perfect, but they should get the job done...I hope! ;D

what size motors are fitted to your cars fred?

they give heat like original
BUT off course if you have the big diametre of 48mms
inside fins is less than original since outside of the heat exchanger remains same size
you can not change that
but our customers (mostly UK) are very satisfied with the heat AND combined with a big engine

This is a system built for Billboa by Doug Berg.
Beautiful work, fits great and very detailed. I can't imagine it took less than several days to complete this ...

That looks like a nice system-the down pipes on the heater boxes look like a nice addition and well at the extra material to support the dual mufflers.  I bet it works pretty well!

I have an idea that could fit in this topic very nicely...

How about making a bigger j-tube from stainless stell, and then fit it in the body of original heat exchanger ?
Would that work ?

do what i did, made a choice between a warm coat and heat exchangers...............the coat won ;D

Your car has had the tubes cut off the heater channels.  Just put a hot potato in your jacket pocket.

There are also heater muffs available for aircrafts that just clamp over your existing j tubes

Damn, those are WAY too much work! Modifying the stock (German) ones is much easier then starting from scratch. You can't use the stock fins in any instance due to the shape they are inside, but there are many other ways to add fins for heat transfer. I think a variation of the 40hp boxes would be simple and effective. I didn't build any 40hp style ones, but I would give it a thought before doing anything too drastic. Less work in the end.
