Title: sourcing type 3 rear shoes and cylinders.

im trying to source type 3 rear brake shoes and wheel cylinders.both cylinders are leaking and its weeped fliud onto the shoes so im replacing both.ive been told that the cylinders are the same as 1303 front drum cylinders.any views on this?looking for a source in the uk.many thanks

yep, very true i think late and early (but after 63) are all the same.

I used front brake shoes from a drum braked 1302 but they were missing the slot for the metal divider which goes between the shoes. I measured these slots from old shoes and cut them to new shoes with angle grinder.

I also used front cylinders from a 1302. They work perfect with my Ghia dics in the front.

is the hole in the 1302/3 for the handbrake operation lever and interchangeable then?thanks for your replys :)

yes holes match without problems, they are just lazy to manufacture the slots  ;)

No, you're just too cheap to buy proper Type 3 shoes.  They exist.

I´m in a part of Europe where access to the NOS or propper stuff is very limited so I used available aftermarket.

No, you're just too cheap to buy proper Type 3 shoes.  They exist.

they must exist, but 181 is right. i have ordered the ones for a type3 and got thes without the slot. i forgot about it, but i had to grind it in as well. not sure if there is a quality difference between the two or not, but it wasn't german parts.

and even if you order good quality and you want to make the expense, the dealers end up giving you the same old, non german or quality stuff all over again. i can tell you the mahle bearing-story if someone cares...  ::) in short it was a super lightweight centerbearing i ended up with and untill i had my engine built by Stevesvwshop, i never saw a real real centerbearing and never thought about it that it was supposed to be so heavy. that is what you get when suppliers always stock cheap parts. but i have learned yet another thing and now i know what to by, the hard question  is where.

like i said i can relate to 181's story. but the brake shoes i had to cut the slot in work really well and have never let me down so far.

I got mine from GSF - I'm sure I'll have the part numbers somewhere - will have a look tonight.

This isn't "the manufacturer being lazy".  It's your supplier sending you the wrong part.  If the manufacturer knew his part could fit another car by simply adding a tiny slot, they would.
