Title: Breakfast with Hector
Post by: Sarge on November 22, 2009, 06:10:23 am
Pretty cool getting to see Hector Bonilla and his '67 today.  Hector has been taking care of his ailing parents for the past few years and has not been seen at club functions so it was sweet to surprise him in his own neighborhood.  Carlos lives near Hector and managed to get him over to the newly renovated Bob's Big Boy this morning for breakfast.  SURPRISE!!! 8) ;D

The new Bob's is on Firestone Blvd in Downey.  It occupies some VERY sacred ground.  This was the site of Harvey's Broiler back in the '50's and '60's... a cruising mecca that featured a nightly mix of rods, kustoms, muscles and car hops. 8) 8) 8)

Very special moment indeed! Hector couldn't stop hugging people
 :)
The place looks fantastic. They did a great job inside, too, with a few pictures from the original restaurant.

ah, if there is one reason to be in a club for me this would be it!

just get together go to a friends place or somewhere and kick it. nothing more, nothing less, just take the car for a spin and have a good time with your friends.

btw that looks so hot!

(not Carlos, but Hectors car)

How cool is that!  Hectors car knocked me out when I first saw it in Trends back in what...89 or 90?  Then met him several times during my travels out there and he is always the nicest guy!  Nice to see him out having fun.  Same With Dave K..super nice guy.

A bit off topic....Been a while since I have been out there, but I gotta say that when I was first building my car the DKP guys were always great.  I was so obsessed with the cars and totally intimidated, yet as a group, they were always very kind to Melissa and I.  Im sure I have said it before, but it should probably be said again - thanks guys!

Heard about this event... very cool of all of you, Sarge. You guys picked a great venue, too. Haven't been there in years.

One can never tire from looking Hector's ride, so... one more time:

Also was on the September 1990 cover of Hot VWs in the Cal Look issue. GOOD STUFF.

Hey fellas, I've got nothing but envy for all of you being able to cruise the new BBBB (Bobs Big Boy Broiler), aka Harveys/Johnies, in Downey. The photos look like you had a great time and meal. It was my place of choice after hitting Lions Drag Strip in the late fifties, early sixties. I even cruised Harveys in my first VW later that decade.

The new BBBB is all about cars and I hope the local VW's and VW clubs like the DKP will support the "real drive-in" they built. Please continue to enjoy it for all of us out of state compatriots that are not able to join in the fun.

See you on  the salt.................

Burly

Just a few more...
The T-bar gang & a cabinet at Mooneyes. There's so much history on those shelves!
The last picture was taken today at Battle of the Imports (Fontana). That's club member Jason Foster on his way to a pass in the 12.40s. He drives the car everywhere! We saw him on Saturday at Bob's Broiler and he drove to Fontana today, too. Incidentally, Eric Calabrese was racing his Red Baron Oval as well & posted an amazing 8.36 ET!!!
 :o

Spoke to Hector a while back and he said he really missed the guys - but he had to look after his family first. I told him if he got himself back out into the VW world it'd probably give him a real boost and take his mind off things a little. The problem was that he didn't want to be at a meet or a car show way over on  the other side of town and get a call to say he was needed NOW!
Hector was and still is an inspiration to me and in many ways my mentor. The way he is so deeply into things on and in his '67 is what I really like.
Every time I see a shot of the rear of the car it makes me happy - as I sourced the original Speedwell badge over here in the UK - I had four of them, and I gave it to Hector as a present - it was so long ago I can't recall, but I think it was for Christmas. Anyway, in typical HB style he spent an eon working out how and where he'd use/fit it. Eventually he found that chrome licence plate frame and fitted the badge to it. He couldn't have found a better home for it.
I'm really happy to see him back in action and the car back out. I really wish I could have been there.

Welcome back compadre!

Cool report Sarge...Hectors car- still inspiring.....guessing you don't appear in too many shots because either a) you are chief photographer or b)you were chewing out the diner for not having a wine list :P
