Title: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: deano on November 29, 2009, 05:36:38 am Now, this is something I would love to own. I just don't know how to get it home!
http://cgi.ebay.com/OCIR-Dragstrip-sign-on-side-of-I-5-freeway-original_W0QQitemZ120497708493QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_SM_Fan_Shop?hash=item1c0e391dcd Any estimates on how much this sign will go for? Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: low oval on November 29, 2009, 06:58:30 am not only how would you get it home, but where would you put it? It's too big for the average garage. no doubt it would be kool to own.
Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: Sam K on November 29, 2009, 08:59:51 am That is too cool!
Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: Rennsurfer on November 29, 2009, 09:20:18 am Just give it to our own Randy... it would go rather nicely with his garage decor.

Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: deano on November 29, 2009, 15:54:59 pm I think they'll be room in someone's container going east.... hint, hint.
Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: Speed-Randy on November 29, 2009, 18:05:16 pm Just give it to our own Randy... it would go rather nicely with his garage decor. Well if you guys are gonna "give" it to me, I will gladly display it in my garage. It would fit fine and it would stay in O.C., right next to the famous Whittier blvd. cruise/dragstrip. Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: axam48ida on November 29, 2009, 18:43:11 pm 3,500 starting bid leaves it to those with plenty of disposable income..................
reminds me of the old Ascot park sign I have sashed away.........another piece of so cal history. Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: deano on November 29, 2009, 18:51:27 pm Tony, the old Carlsbad Raceway center two signs went for a mere $10,000 for the pair. The "Snake" wrote the check for those... I think this sign could easily go for that. If it wasn't so GD long.
Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: axam48ida on November 29, 2009, 19:10:03 pm Deano,
I know of the old Baylands (Fremont drag strip) sign a friend has, I tried but he wouldn't part with it. I guess someday it will pay for a year of college for his kid? Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: Rennsurfer on November 30, 2009, 00:16:35 am Well if you guys are gonna "give" it to me, I will gladly display it in my garage. It would fit fine and it would stay in O.C., right next to the famous Whittier blvd. cruise/dragstrip. Yep! Hence why I suggested your venue for that great piece of So Cal memory. Oh well... hopefully, it stays in Orange County where it belongs. Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: Russell on November 30, 2009, 22:49:02 pm Im sure it will stay where it belongs in OC but my hunch is it wont be a VW guy...........shame.
However, it could sit above a nice collection of old racers....... i can see the photo shoot now ! ;D Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: Rennsurfer on December 01, 2009, 01:49:42 am I agree, it should sit above non-VW racers and stay in Orange County.
Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: Russell on December 01, 2009, 23:29:44 pm Wow Fred..... we agree ;)
Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: Rennsurfer on December 02, 2009, 01:29:48 am Wow Fred..... we agree ;) Yeah, neato. So... back to thread content; who's gonna end up with this sign? Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: DKK Ted on December 02, 2009, 01:39:54 am Deano, get HotVW's to buy it, that would be cool, but then where would you put it? Or even a local VW cliub. ;) We can't let that sign go to just anybody. :(
Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: deano on December 02, 2009, 02:27:54 am Looking at the auction that just ended, the sign did not make its reserve, which is a surprise. I do not think the "players" were aware of it sale due to the way it was listed. Hard to tell if it will go back on e-bay and try it again, or ?
Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: Rennsurfer on December 02, 2009, 02:31:08 am Thanks for the update, Deano.
Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: Jon on December 02, 2009, 11:11:47 am How about opening a food place with a vintage drag race theme in the businesses area where the track used to be... this sign would be the perfect name sign for that place...
Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: Rennsurfer on December 02, 2009, 15:06:56 pm How about opening a food place with a vintage drag race theme in the businesses area where the track used to be... this sign would be the perfect name sign for that place... If the economy wasn't so weird, I'd say yes to that. Pretty cool idea, Jon. Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: Jon on December 02, 2009, 15:28:49 pm Isn't the saying "build it and they will come" valid any more?
If it helps I will try to eat there every second year... :P Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: Rennsurfer on December 02, 2009, 15:30:46 pm Isn't the saying "build it and they will come" valid any more? If it helps I will try to eat there every second year... :P Heck, if they build it in Orange County, I'll eat there at least once a week. The saying still rings true... it's just finding someone willing to do it, locally. Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: Speed-Randy on December 02, 2009, 15:50:31 pm The saying is now" if you pay for it, I will build it, then, they might come"

Are said brothers residents of the United States of America? Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: Fastbrit on December 05, 2009, 09:29:36 am My guess would be 2 brothers. That'd be my first guess... second would be an electrical contractor!Title: Re: Original OCIR Sign on e-Bay! Post by: deano on December 05, 2009, 19:02:44 pm Okay, here is the skinny... I purchased the OCIR sign yesterday... What was not said on the e-bay auction is that 30-ft long metal sign came apart! So, it actually unbolts into two sections; one 3'x16' and the other 3'x14'. The sign is heavy gauge sheet metal with an angle iron frame. On the bottom right hand corner, the guys who actually unbolted it from the wall, signed their names and dated it. Remember, the last drag race at OCIR was Oct 1983. The sign was kept at a Irvine High School shop class for years, until the guys at Victory Racecars bought it around '93 or '94. The Ivine Company, who actually owned the land OCIR was on, gave permission for the school to have the sign back in '84. How many of us can remember driving by this familiar sign on their way to the track.
