Title: 1776 with FK-7?
Post by: Jesse/DVK on December 01, 2009, 10:57:10 am
Guys, i'm looking for some advice.

For a friend of mine we are going to build a nice 1776cc. Car is a 72 beetle which is a complete street car. use is mostly street and maybe a couple of times some strip action. Setup will be the usual, AS41, DPR crank, 043 heads with 40x35.5, etc. with 40 Dells or 48 IDA's (when funds allow or maybe next year)

I have a FK-8 in my 1915 and I'm really pleased with it. Do you guys think this is to much for a 1776? Maybe one step down to a Fk-7. Or use the widely used W120?

Thanks!

I think it's the perfect choice for that size street engine... but why build a 1776 when a 1915 costs the same?

Depends on what your friend wants as far as powerband. The 120, as I have said for many years, coupled with small port heads and 44IDFs makes for a very "sports car" like character from the engine. Silky smooth, will run to 6500 with ease, good fuel mileage.
The K8 is a great cam as well, but will be more visceral and less streetable, but if he wants a real ass kicker, it would be my choice.
Does your friend already have ratio rockers? We ran an FK7 in a 1679cc with Jeff Denham 40 x 37 heads, 36DRLAs in a Type 3 years ago, and it seemed to run very well, but very docile, even in that small-ish cc engine. Too docile for my taste.
So I would say:

Driveable, smooth, fast, refined: use 120

Upper end power band, less usable torque, strong cam "come on" @ 4000: use K8

I have an FK7 in my 78x90.5 Berg motor, 40x35.5 p/p heads, 40 DRLA's, etc.....  IMO, the FK7 is pretty docile, and doesn't jump until about 3500rpm.  I won't say it's a slouch, because it's not.  But I do think there's a better choice.  Now.......it's going turbo, so the FK7 will work great!   ;D
