Title: Turbos. Draw-through or Blow-through? Discuss
Post by: RUSS74GHIA on December 22, 2009, 00:33:03 am
I'm planning a draw through using a T05 and a Holley750. I've seen this set up a few times and it would appear to be a reasonably easy set up to build.

But what are the pros/cons of such a system?

Easy to build is the main pro, they do make decent power fairly easily. Disadvantage is that they aren't as flexible a system as a blow through.
I built a pull-through for my car several years ago but didn't get the ignition right so it didn't work too well. I took it off then and gave up - i might have another go one day!
I have no experience with a blow through system, just spoken to plenty of people who have!

Since we run on propane we we're able to do a mix. The throttle valve is in blowthrough position but the venturi ( thing that meters gas) is mounted in the airfiltertube. We've got the response of a blowthrough with the simplicity of a drawthrough. The high octane number of gas is a pro too.
You'll probaby stick with petrol but i thought I'd share the info anyway.

blow-thru, single throttle body + efi

by the time you've mucked around with fuel pumps, MSD/Mallory CDi and carbs and jets and sh!t, you may as well go for what will work in all situations rather than something that will always being a compromise somewhere...

x2

In the long run its cheaper. and you'll have a system you can put on any future motor.

I was originally planning on running a 750 draw through on my bug. I think they can be made to work reasonably well and certainly be an easier option if you just want a simple drag race setup. One question i would be asking is if you can get the turbo carbon sealed to prevent fuel leaking into the journal bearings. Personally I would go with a blow through setup- you aren't restricted where the turbo would sit- you wouldn't need the turbo seal, they can be mapped more precisely and have more control than the draw through setup you can also run an intercooler/chargecooler to make the air more dense for more power.
