i was thinking of rewiring my bug and saw the painless wiring kits in the summit catalog...does someone has any experience with it ??
i would like to have your toughts...

Working with one in AssHull's car right now. I'm no electrical expert by a long shot! Morphing the Painless harness together with the stock lights/switches and then with the Porsche instruments kinda boggles my mind... Thankfully, AssHull and some other friends have taken over that part of the job!! ;D

hee zack  did you totally removed the old harness and welded up the hole for the fusebox ?
and i was thinking about using the 18- circuit standard harness, what are u using ??

Do you have photos of the installation or the kit? Is it like delivered as bunch of separate cables or some section in (don't know English terminology here..) "heat-shrunk tubing"? How long are the cables?

If it's factory color coded, it's so simple, anybody with one eye and half an asshole can do it. Go on the samba, print out your year and model, follow diagram from point A to point B, and your done. All those little numbers are also on the switches, so you just plug them in. Make sure you clean up your grounds and it should work fine

The painless systems are quite cool -- put one in the Fiat -- each wire is labeled to where it goes, at about every foot in length, makes it quite easy to splice into the existing loom where ever you choose to

If you mean is is VW factory color coded, then I don't think so. I believe it is a from scratch wiring harness and fuse block with swith block depending on the model. I would guess Zach is tieing into part of an existing harness rather than replacing the whole banana.

I used the wiring kit from VW Heritage - original style and colouring,and pretty much complete with connectors, even down to the courtesy light in the roof. Took about a week of evenings to fit and get working. I'd certainly use one again.

This is the type of wiring loom I was talking about. There are manufactures of these in the states also. You can get them from ISP West , they work perfect, and super easy to install.

Nope, whole banana here! Factory fuse box was welded up, Painless block was installed under the rear seat area with the wires running through the heater channel.

hi zack i followed that thread but seemed to have missed that part, i had a look again and that what i was looking for, i will have a go at the painless one also i want the new type of fuse's and it looks neat...

when i counted fuse's it seems you used the 12 circuit...
i think i will go for the 18 circuit, better to have a bit more then one short... ;D

these are okay kits for replacing the old one with not to many add ons i think, but i want to get rid off the old fuse's and have a lot more to wire up....electrick cooling fan, two fuelpumps, nitro, linelock...that kind off stuff..

so summit has an order again...

   Not on my VW'S but I have installed one on my 32 Hot Rod very easy and quick here are a few pictures before it was all done.

personally I'd never use a painless kit or painless parts in my VW... I can remember reading on their site where they basically call the VW the biggest piece of shit ever made... ( good ol' hot rodder mentality ~ yes I know this is not the normal reaction any more ) I tend to give my money to business that are for the old VW's not against them...
 
with that said... I don't know what you couldn't do with a stock VW harness that you could do with one of the American car type's

I just finished putting a painless-type wiring harness in the '56 --- a few things sucked -- -- like at the speedo -- in a VW there is a power wire to it and then the wires run from it to the gen/alt, oil sender, and turnsignals -- Most of the harnesses you get are GM based units so you have to figure out something different there -- a 8 circuit is more than enuff -- we don't need a power window etc etc etc --- the main difference between a painless and the "other" brands is the quality of the wire -- the cheaper the quality the biger the wire -- The one I got was cheap and by the time I made the wiring harness it was very big around to the point I couldn't run it up and over so I ran it next to the trans hump inside.
