Title: Cooling problems from cutting out rear valance
Post by: Dereck on December 31, 2009, 16:51:03 pm
The rear end had been cut off my '66 by a previous owner and I've been debating whether to weld it back on or cut it down and attach just the outer skin of the rear valance to the wings with Dzus fasteners.

The issue I've been wrestling with is what the gap between the deck lid and body would look like? So I mocked up the rear wing & deck lid to try and work out what it would look like.

I think I could live with it, but will I run into cooling problems later if I decide to use the Bug on the road?

I would try to find a car being broken and get the engine bay from that. Trim it to fit in place and hold it on with Dzus fasteners - makes working on the engine so much easier.

Edit - just seen your pictures on yout In Da Werks thread and realise what you mean! Definately keep the back end seperate, just mount it properly! :D

I have been considering removing the inner wings altogether for better future access or weld it all back on, add in the missing side trays in the engine bay and then make just the valance removable?

This image shows how it's previously been cut

and this one just about shows the missing side panels at the bottom of the pic.

I'd add the side trays in, then use some Dzus fasteners to hold the back end in place. It makes everything from maintenance to tuning so much easier to do! You don't even need to jack the car up to take the motor out...

I've got some pics somewhere! I'll try to find them.
