Title: project budget 66 'looker! NOW PAINTED!
Post by: beetletom on January 12, 2010, 21:13:57 pm
picked up this original uk car just before christmas, planning on keeping it stock

but was bored after a few weeks, so decided to cal look it, but nothing too much, so i can easily change it back to stock.

it had never been welded, except the rear bumper mounts! not bad for a uk car  :o original channels, 1/4's! wings! interior and carpet :D etc... best of all, it has no repro parts on it so far...!

but it needed a little, bonnet corners repaired, a post gutters cleaned up, seat runner welded, front lower 1/4's cleaned up (even has the original seams! :o 8) )
which i've just had done this week.

it needs rear bumper mounts changing back to the correct ones (hookeys) and the bottom lip of the doors repairing too.

i have already fitted a header and twin quietpack , which cost £3! but needed a flange welding on
simpson harnesses, and a csp shifter which i got for cheap!  ;)

and my friend repaired the front seats

picking up a new lowered beam next week for it, to prevent from cutting the original one

plan is to stick on some bbt sprints, and return the outside back to the original ruby red.

looking good tom. 66s are way cool, never had one myself but my bro jay had a sea blue one a few years ago. it was a bit tatty, faded paint ect, totally stock (apart from the 1600cc motor), ive always loved harvey rosenthal's 66 too 8)

hope to finally pick up the beam this week, then the front end can be dropped!

then have the door bottem seal lips repaired, the guy who's doing the welding is perfect, you couldn't tell if the areas had ever been repaired!
and thats without filler too!

anyone know if its worth fitting lowered ball joints?

Title: Re: project budget 66 'looker!
Post by: beetletom on February 18, 2010, 22:15:05 pm
picked up the beam, didn't realise how heavy it would be, had to carry it back on the underground  :D

picking up some hookeys bumper mounts at dubfreeze

then the beam, and mounts should be fitted next week!  ;D

still umming and arring over wheels though, silver 66 steels, 5.5's out back, or a set of bbt sprints??

Title: Re: project budget 66 'looker!
Post by: beetletom on February 21, 2010, 20:45:02 pm
lowered beam being fitted tomorrow  8)

ordered the pair of wide 66 steels today for the rear.

wheels are silver and will be running without caps.

yep! managed to sort it
but once it was on the floor, i realised i had lowered the back too much (1 outer spline) so decided to throw on my roofrack for now
not how i wanted it to be (more nose down)

might raise the rear after volksworld show

thanks guys! yep, rack is just temporary  :D till the back end is raised

i think i might get a set of bbt sprints at volksworld anyway
and some smaller front tyres!

Title: Re: project budget 66 'looker!
Post by: beetletom on March 14, 2010, 19:31:49 pm
might aswell raise the rear tomorrow, as going down to change the track rods...

hopefully getting the spare pair of 66 steels back from blasting tomorrow too

Title: Re: project budget 66 'looker!
Post by: beetletom on April 16, 2010, 19:13:54 pm
quite a bit been happening, also been driving it about pretty much every day for the last 2 weeks

fitted a worn out kadron, so very loud  ;D but have a single quietpack with kadron flange, so tha might go on at some point...
harnesses too.

the set of steels have now been painted, fitted the 5.5 rears today, looks very pre cal look!
but the rear height needs to be raised stiil!!!
just need to get some more ££ for some front tyres, but have sold the rack, so fronts should be fitted next week

fitted pop outs too from the 65

Title: Re: project budget 66 'looker!
Post by: beetletom on April 18, 2010, 20:55:48 pm
sorry, forgot to take pics today  ::) refitted stock exhaust with taper tips, the worn out kadron was just ridiculous  :D
fitted a flat 4 eliminator shifter, is awesome! probably the best aftermarket shifter i've owned (so far) fitted it in, and it required no adjustment!
due to no silly base plate

a tiny repair to one of the bulkhead corners, and correct rear bumper mounts, have the original wings repaired
then a respray on the outside

Title: Re: project budget 66 'looker! PIC ADDED!
Post by: beetletom on April 23, 2010, 11:31:58 am
much better.
i think thats stock height at the rear??  but looking at the pic at the top, it needs to go a bit higher?
but it looks good anyway...

just need to get some lower profile front tyres, then i can fit the front wheels.

Looks a little low to me, Love those widened 66-67 wheels, though, Just raise it til it's at zero camber ;)

Title: Re: project budget 66 'looker! PIC ADDED!
Post by: beetletom on April 23, 2010, 19:50:11 pm
thanks!

yep, its hard to tell once the car is in the air.
i had to raise up one side twice!

Title: Re: project budget 66 'looker! PIC ADDED!
Post by: beetletom on May 06, 2010, 20:00:41 pm
at the volksworld show i bought an RX exhaust that looked like if it had been ran over  :D

i bought it, thinking i could be fixed, it could be, but not worth it...
so i had my friend cut off the end and weld a 3 bolt flange to it, while still keeing the 'rx' look to it

just need to get a 4 into 1 header

silver front steels are on now with 135's!

picked up a trekker fanshroud today from andy jewell, he said which actually came from an aircraft, which is cool!

even has a few cool tags on it, which i'll probably keep on it.

need to get a bracket made up for my empi pulley kit
and some decent single barrel twin carbs, then i pretty much have all my engine bits.

any idea if going for a 1679 slip in kit is worth it?
or just go for a 1641?

Title: Re: project budget 66 'looker!

Looking good Tom ;)

Some people put those 88mm cylinder/piston kits but some say that they are aliitle bit too thin on the case point. I had few kits in my hands and must say that 87 looks ok, but I wouldn'tgo for 88mm. Try to get 74 or 76 stroake crank and go with Youre 85,5mm stuff (but try to use new set of barrels and pistons 85,5 or 87 -those are a bit mor expensive), clerance the case nad there You go.
good luck mate

cheers Tom.

I'm going for 88's, but I'm an idiot :)

Title: Re: project budget 66 'looker!
Post by: beetletom on May 20, 2010, 19:17:04 pm
thanks, i decided to go for some 1641 barrels and pistons, as a mate had a set cheap!
going to decoke them and re ring them too.

bought a 1600 longblock today and a pair of kadrons

fitted my butchered rx  :D
sounds exactly like a stinger! probably because the only bit of baffling is in the tail pipes, and have had a 3 bolt flange welded to it

razzed it up the main road on my way home, then noticed a cop car approaching in my rear view mirror, as i got to the roundabout, so kept it in 4th, as he followed me all the way home  :-[
he must of heard me right up the road!  :o :P

the 65 is sold, and is going to bournemouth tomorrow.

Title: Re: project budget 66 'looker!
Post by: beetletom on July 28, 2010, 13:06:18 pm
work has started on the 66!

having hookeys rear bumper mounts welded in
original rear body mounts repaired
original wings repaired
and a small repair to the bulkhead just above the master cylinder where it has peppered through.

and a repaint!  ;D

got a good 1500 gearbox going in! (and then i can sort the rear height properly!)
a nice stainless turbo muffler and header
and had my brm's blasted

don't worry, the cookie cutters are only on there to roll it about on!

the worst bits are the rear body mounts and bumper mounts

got a black 66 only interior for it too!
just need to find some door cards.

Title: Re: project budget 66 'looker!

the dings and dents have been sorted

not the only person to think that?

a post gutter has been pulled out and straightened, 1/4 panel too, as it has had a bit of a knock

rear bumper mount welded in and rear body mount was all welded in by the time i left, hookeys ones didnt fit mine sadly, so had to use the usual repro bumper mounts

i still have the original 1966 body mounts if anyone wants to make a good copy of them? the passenger side one looks exactly the same as the usual repro style you can buy, but the drivers looks like a late one, for the z bar, with the pressing, but not cut out!

front end pulled out and straightened, don't worry, the filler looks worse than it is, just a light skim :D

and look at the size of the amp under the bonnet, then you can understand how big the stereo was that was in it

the inner wing is finished off, nice and smooth! flush panel joins
just the heater channel end plate to do...
can't even tell it has ever been welded (well, the repairs are invisible), and the spotwelds have been remade too

Title: Re: project budget 66 'looker!
Post by: beetletom on September 16, 2010, 19:43:36 pm
....

more welding has been done, a small repair on the running board mounting strip, below the rear 1/4, heater channel is nice and rot free inside too!

and the heater channel end plate had just been layed over the top of the old one!!!
and whats better is that its only had 2 holes about a cm long near the outside edge, so those have been welded up!

no idea why someone badly tacked on one over the top!!

all the welding is now done , prepped for primer, which will be done later this week

inner wings, and front bulkhead area now stonechipped and flatted back

i passed my test on tuesday 1st try!, but now got no car to drive!  :D

now pretty much finished, just rear brake shoes to fit , then it can go for an mot

have sorted the stance, now back up to stock height at the rear, and has a proper rake!  8) but i will probably change my mind soon and lower it again  :-[  :D
threw on the t bars for now, till i get my bumpers

picking up a pair of banded steels at slough for the rear, just temporary wheels for now

have worked on it solidly for the last few weeks, changed rear hub oil seals, gearbox mounts, and stuff like that

was planning on taking it for an mot today, but the handbrake cable snapped last night, have been trying to find one all day today, managed to order one in
so will be finally taking it for its mot tomorrow!!!

i defiantly think a set of sprints will suit it!  8) so will get a set next year

put the trim rings on, as my steels are pretty ratty looking!!

can't wait to fit the 1500 box and get the rest of the bits for my 1641!

oh and the bumper irons and wipers will be painted the correct silver soon ;)
