Small cyl cc, smallish, whistiling ports (think organ in a church) and lots of cam timing, Vs big cyl lungs, cavernous ports and stumpy cams. The age old debate... if guys look into what some race motors out of factories did (for more than 11-12-13 sec), we'd move forward. And the beer-fueled hours in jr college trig, figuring out where piston was at opening/closing, and taking swept volume from there.... there's your dynamic CR. If w/ the both what is the hp gains w/ just the bleeds and what apx. hp gains w/ the rifel drilled venturies? Can I get a set of venturies? I run 50mm venturies in my 58s but was wanting to up them to 52mm. If I were to put rifel drilled what size should I run? Are they drilled at a taper/angel or straight down? But, the airspeed into the cylinder goes up (to a point) too? I guess for ultimate in high rpm filling, you want that In valve to close as late as possible. I think of it like, just because you turn the garden hose tap off, you still got that column of water in that 15' hose going somewhere (unless you have a trigger sprayer on the other end, in the closed position). here @ sea level we're all under pressure, literally. Can't see it, feel it, smell it, but it's there, and good thing or the blood would boil in our veins.
Makes hp too, if we harness it. (I'm not a turbo VW guy. ) What's facinating, is that these modern engines with VVT or Variocam or whatever acronym each manufacturer chooses to use, they ALSO retard cam timing for a smooth IDLE. Less cyl pressure? Alfa was doing it way back in the early 1980's. Maybe they were rusting but... Fun to think about this stuff while you ride a big inner tube down a CA river... you can see it for yourself, what's going on in between the air horn and the comb chamber. Sometimes I wonder what my car would do if I backed up my cam back to 108ATDC, from the 104ATDC the intake f.l. is at now. Maybe become a wet dish rag. My cam is similar to an Engle "135" ;D. Lots of hand wringing and sleepless nights deciding, but Mario over @ Pauter turned me on to the stick in my car. Your bro "finished" the heads that are on my car (they were a few years in the making on my workbench up north, then ditched the project when I moved to Southern Calif, the guy that ended up w/ them sent to Clyde to finish up). More than e.t.'s I built this one for therapy. Therapy for me isn't a floorjack and wrenches strewn about, oil lines bleeding all over my garage. If I were a rich man, I'd own (and drive) one of the Italian-engineered jewels I'm always clamoring on and on about... A Miura S would probably do it. But I'm never gonna have that kind of dough in my back pocket, so I decided to "use what I have" and give it a soul and character as close to what I see in some 12-cyl exotica as I can, which is probably the sign of a real misfit in the VW world. I did this motor to "pretend", giving similar characteristics (I hope) in power delivery (not amount, of course), sound, etc. I can get out on one of these Ventura County backroads and "pretend", as silly as it sounds, it's kept me interested in my car, a good thing. I can sit bored @ work, in a cube, for 8+ hr, looking forward to my 25 min drive home thru the canyon, Webers howling, power on oversteer, matched revs on the downshifts, and then roll it in the garage, pat in on the roof and do it again the next day. I think the best motors are the (naturally asp) ones that show a pressure over 1atm in the cylinder somewhere before the piston gets to BDC and starts its trip north on the compression stroke. But at what rpm? I bet the point (degree wheel) where that cyl pressure nudges over 1atm moves all over the scale, dependent on rpm. We're talking a constant of full throttle here. then we can drag rod ratio into play. I like to tell guys, a piston sitting still isn't doing its job (making vacuum or compressing air/fuel), and the more the piston is in movement, the more the carbs and heads "feel" the pull of the motor, maybe fooling them into "thinking" they're on a bigger motor. (if you take stock length rod, and hang it on an 82 crank instead of 69, with same bore... do the heads and carbs get a stronger signal? , above and beyond just the increase in cyl volume 8)) if you can get through the incredibly dry text, the book by Philip H Smith (Scientific Design of Exhaust and Intake Systems) is dated, but informative on this stuff. At that point, before BDC, where we want the cyl to be big and full and fat (above 1atm)... what role does "venturi" effect of valve throat and closing int valve (low lift) play? Hey Doug, did you mention on the last page that you have a cam grind with IO and IC similar to a K8 and EO and EC similar to a K10 or did I miss interpret that? If this is true, what made you decide on this custom grind? I understand you are trying to reach greater then 100% VE, NA, and to try to do this you are changine when a valve opens/closes as well as using the scavanging effect of the exhaust to force more air and fuel into the cylinder. I think I am getting lost looking at the cam card numbers on the K8 and K10-either that or the cold medicine is kicking in!!! This is going way back though... ::) I like the idea of the longer exhaust time, though I've never run one myself, let the waste product do some more work than "make noise", sure, why not increase the pull the heads and carbs see. I'm always up for more signal, but gotta be from bottom to top (no loss on top, or why bother with longer duration, 48's...etc) For me to "get" why the advance in the cam's "job" works, I have to draw cartoons of what's taking place. easiest way to understand it. Doug, did you ever read my bit about "plenum-ed" 48IDA manifolds? For race stuff. To make a long story short, which I can w/ you, because I know you'll get it... 1. join the two intake runners somewhere north of intake flange, but south of butterfiles (imagine a Skat Trak that, as it Y's up, joins into a common plenum, under BOTH butterflies)2. at high revs, on intake stroke ONE cylinder, while IO, can pull through TWO butterflies, vents, jet stacks...etc. Yeah i know, what happens to low speed running? I have no answer here... I only looked at it from high revs, that big fat cylinder is basically seeing the sky as air/fuel source. what do you think about that? Maybe you guys have fooled w/ it? I remember seeing a motor in the back shop one day your Mom was walking us around, and there was a drag motor on the floor with a DCNF per cylinder ... you? I think a lot of figuring this stuff out is half science and half having in it your blood and half just trying stuff. Talking car stuff is what gives me a total rush, makes me forget the boring parts of life etc. Some guys like to solo on a Stratocaster, I like driving and talking cars. A lot. Don't feel stupid, dude, you have talents and tricks beyond comprehension (your whole deal with welding header pipes with the hose clamp.... genius if you ask me). Obviously, Doug is talented and gifted as well, just read the stuff he creates and comes up with. Maybe to some a little eccentric (so?) but no matter, if it's what "gives him wings" then fly. I thought about this "plenum" thing one night after a bottle of chianti and listening to tunes and going into "think mode" and I wish I had a dyno and could weld and so on... too cool to see it's been done. I came upon 104 from a few reasons.... like I had posted somewhere up above, I was looking for point where on intake stroke (or exh, really, but...) where piston is at max velocity. Somewhere between (this was over 10 years ago now) the cut 94mm cylinder (cut in half longwise, like splitting a banana), a degree wheel, my Bosch handbook and screwing around with trig, it seemed that "104" was the magic number... it isn't, but ... the other reasons supported this, sort of, meaning a number of "engine guys" I talked to about cam timing, always suggested "104" (but they said "to make this cam run, advance it 4 deg"). One motor, believe it or not, I set up @ 102, but it was a 280@ .050 deal. total newb to vw's , more on the honda inline 4 stuff's and oddly enough some wisdom in the vw world works for inline 4s and maybe some on the inline 4s would work, maybe not.. but im sure since their both IC engines.. i know id enjoy the knowledge.. back earlier (hope its not too late) Jim mentioned about camming, (hopefully not too overcammed) a decent/small port or high velocity port'd engine, in theory i think that should up the VE if done right, provided the induction system is working in conjunction to the engine+ rpm + displacement and rod ratio , together once again with the exhaust system, obviously there is more : over cammed, big daddy ports and big jugged motor, that tends to be lazy.. is there room to ramble about high velocity ports (provided we dont go to sonic choke) and hefty cams (duration) ?
