The Cal-look Lounge

I came across another stash of early pictures I had from the 70's. This one is of Dave Andrews (RACE SHOP-Riverside, California) Modified Compact. I also included a shot of the angle port heads that both he and Darrell Vittone were running in their cars the weekend of this Division 7 NHRA Points Meet in Sacramento, California. The event was in July of 1974.

I will post more shots as I dig up pictures of more early VW drag cars that some of you may have read about or remember.

More great shots. Brings back a lot of fond memories. I was in Tynemouth (NEWCASTLE), England, when the 75 Winternationals were running.

Awesome Winternationals shots! Just look at the crowd behind the starting line for the Modified Eliminator final! And guess where they are all looking? At Butch Leal.... Figures. Notice Dave is running 4-lug rear drums... Interesting. Those were exciting times...

i ever notice that too , why dave changed the rear brake drums  ??? , he ran stock 5lug wheels and after put brm and after stock 4 lug , any stories about that

one nut is easier to undo than 5 or 4 ?

Dave always used a Ghia front end to use disc brakes... But this is the first time I'd noticed 4-lugger on the back. Usually, he ran BRMs on the back, with Spiders on the front.

Did Prescott get hammered with rain or snow?  Phoenix was looking like Portland, Oregon, based upon the amount of rain that hammered us.  One of these days we need to hook up on that tube axle set up.

Notice that Dave Andrews also put supports through the top apron hole to his nerf bars.  Different...

I started to wonder if the car began life as a "Euro" 67 ?
It would have had 4-lug wheels and disc brakes up front.
Alas, it would also have had the '66 style front fenders also.
 ???

It's possible that since Dave was in the military, he could have purchased it overseas.....

With the ever changing NHRA rules governing weight break and weight bias, Lord only knows what those nerf bars weighed  :D

You're right Phil on the goofy 45/55 weight break for /MC. Dave usually ran fiberglass (unpainted) rear fenders and deck lid to lighten the rear end... Last time I talked to Dave, he still had the OEM, original paint rear fenders from this car! From what I can understand, this car (albeit just the bare body), is still around. Since my old '67 was VW Blue as well, this was one of my favs! I never cared for the chromie-homie nerf bars thought.

I just figured it out why Dave had 4-lug drums in the NHRA final.... he must have borrowed Vittone's gearbox from the white '67.

may be you're right , but jere doesn't said anything about that in the report from the winternationals 75  ;)

Im probably one of the few that had a street race in '69 when Dave was still driving that car on the street, I thought i had a very fast race wagon from Riverside, I pull up to dave at a street light on Market and I see this blue '67 with BR rims I figure its some guy that bought the wheels and just another car. Another one to put a notch in my belt. WHen the light turns green next thing I know that car is like 5 links ahead of me. I look to see if I had my car in gear. We stopped at the BnB drive in about a quarter mile down and i cant believe i got blown off that bad. Dave was very friendly and tells me hes working at the race shop. This was when he was in the air force stationed at March. Hes opened the deck lid and showed me the engine no one ran 48's on a street car then except Darrell. After that the car started to get modified more and more and Dave doesnt drive it on the street anymore except for the night I dont know what he was doing but they had to tow the car back, he was either street racing or something AND BROKE THE HOCKEY STIP IN THE TRANS. I remember one night seeing him downtown and he made a pass dehind Marie Calanders.
