Title: 67 Speedo..Help ! Post by: Kaferdog on February 07, 2010, 00:17:19 am Ok here's the story...
The other day I took my car for a spin ....nice day Etc...Etc..!..when I jumped on the freeway the speedo started Sqealing ..Loud And ! mean "Loud"..! ok so I decieded to give it a lil greasing.. and clean the inside glass ...everything went fine got it open no problem..! went to assemble it... wiped some lint off the face and the rag snagged the needle and broke off the tip !!!!!.. just enough to not rest on the stop...my question is how easy is it to replace the needle and how is it done ..? Title: Re: 67 Speedo..Help ! Post by: stealth67vw on February 07, 2010, 00:22:18 am I have no idea how to replace the needle, but squealing is usually the cable not the speedo.
Title: Re: 67 Speedo..Help ! Post by: Kaferdog on February 07, 2010, 00:30:58 am The cable is new ..This was for sure in the speedo..! I almost went deaf afterwards ..my ears were ringing for a hour by the time I got to where I was going... :o

Post by: DeanoVW on February 07, 2010, 09:10:10 am The cable is new ..This was for sure in the speedo..! I almost went deaf afterwards ..my ears were ringing for a hour by the time I got to where I was going... :o I have had exactly the same situation and it turned out it was the cable. I ran some oil down the cable and it fixed it. Title: Re: 67 Speedo..Help ! Post by: plasticblack on February 07, 2010, 10:59:30 am This problem isn't the same on all cars for sure and the 'oil down the cable' route has worked for me in the past.
That said I've had problems previouisly with '67 speedo's squealing.... (and befor you ask, yes it was only 1967 produced speedo's) I had about 7 or 8 NOS Trip Meter Speedos that were all from one batch made in 1967. Each one of these has problems with squealing and the problems were both annonying and intermittent. The fault was both with noise form the speedo and with the needle bouncing? This problem was sometimes fixed by a new cable or oil down the existing cable or in some cases not at all. I think I even sold one of these Speedos to Ivan for his 1967 and he had a similar problem and I replaced his one with a new one. Hopefully yours will be a quick fix... :) Title: Re: 67 Speedo..Help ! Post by: fredy66 on February 07, 2010, 11:17:59 am the reason for me asking was if you get me a 65 spido you can have my 67 if there is a difference.
just trying to help Title: Re: 67 Speedo..Help ! Post by: Kaferdog on February 07, 2010, 11:59:13 am I will try some oil down the cable , but I think I got the "Squealing" fixed but now I have the broken needle to fix . I don't know there is a difference between the speedo's you would have to put them side by side to see as far as 65 or 67 being the same....?...The markings might be different as far as shift points...?
Title: Re: 67 Speedo..Help ! Post by: nicolas on February 07, 2010, 16:40:32 pm damn i thought this post would be about speedo swimgear, i was afraid to look.
put a revcounter insted of the speedo, more accurate ;D Title: Re: 67 Speedo..Help ! Post by: Rennsurfer on February 07, 2010, 16:50:35 pm Kaferdog, I hope that you're able to resolve this speedometer problem that you have. When I bought my '67, the speedo made annoying sounds... especially during takeoff. I disconnected the cable at the gauge and sprayed Boeshield lubricant & corrosion inhibitor down the cable tubing. The sound went away and that was two years ago.
(http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/woeimages/00000568.jpg) Every car/situation differs, of course. Title: Re: 67 Speedo..Help ! Post by: Kaferdog on February 07, 2010, 19:02:54 pm Thanks Fred.......Where can I get that stuff here in So Cal...?
Title: Re: 67 Speedo..Help ! Post by: Donny B. on February 07, 2010, 19:04:23 pm It's not always the speedometer cable. I have some powder lubricant that I use along with some penetrating oil for the cable. I tape a plastic bag around the cable and fill it with oil and the powder lube and hang it on the underside of the hood and let gravity do the rest.
On my trip set speedo I had a problem with the speedo hub and the thing that rotates around it. There was some interference and I needed to sand on the OD of the hub. I think it is pot metal. When it was free to turn without rubbing the hub I put it all back together. It was so bad in the beginning it would seize up and break the speedo cable. By the way my speedo was NOS and it did it from the beginning. Title: Re: 67 Speedo..Help ! Post by: bodgit on February 07, 2010, 20:23:53 pm I had a similar problem with the speedo in my oval, it developed a loud screeching noise and the needle started bouncing all over the place.
I sent mine off to http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=875460 (http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=875460) and when it came back it looked as good as new. Something had gone internally and as you can see from the photos, it was covered in paint, (probably from the car being resprayed with everything still fitted) as well as having the wrong needle. Some before's and after's, it was definitely the same speedo btw ;) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/dsc00266.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/dsc00265.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/dsc00014.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/dsc00013.jpg) Matt Title: Re: 67 Speedo..Help ! Well I didn't dare take mine apart so I've no idea how they fit together, but by virtue of mine getting a new needle, I guess it is possible. I would give the people in that samba ad a poke and see what they say. Matt P.S. I've no idea how mine came to have that needle in the first place either ??? Title: Re: 67 Speedo..Help ! Post by: Kaferdog on February 07, 2010, 22:25:38 pm I have talked with those guyz in the past...I will give them a call...the speedo really came apart very easlily...! I was puttin it back together and did one last dust off of the face when I broke the needle..... !!!!..I was just thinking "Let me grab a Q-Tip" when I did that ...!!!...... :o :o :o :o :o
Title: Re: 67 Speedo..Help ! Post by: Rennsurfer on February 08, 2010, 01:56:41 am Thanks Fred.......Where can I get that stuff here in So Cal...? Good question... I'd consult Google and go from there. My large spray can was given to me by my roommate when he moved out, a couple of years back. I'll have to look through my old photo albums, but I'm quite sure that I took apart my '66 speedometer when I switched from mph to kph and painted the needle orange to match my VDO gauges. The glass actually came off pretty easy. I also cleaned the face and everything in there when I had it apart waiting for the paint to dry. Turned out very nice. Title: Re: 67 Speedo..Help ! Find a donor needle and re-assemble. Title: Re: 67 Speedo..Help ! Post by: Kaferdog on February 10, 2010, 04:15:00 am The needle will pry off, just be very careful. Find a donor needle and re-assemble. Thanks .....Thats what I was looking for ...!...Does it need to go back in the exact same position...Or close to it ....?? Title: Re: 67 Speedo..Help ! Post by: Chris W on February 10, 2010, 05:50:01 am Almost any bicycle shop will have T9 for sale.
Title: Re: 67 Speedo..Help ! Post by: Rennsurfer on February 10, 2010, 06:14:06 am Almost any bicycle shop will have T9 for sale. Good call, Chris... you're right and I totally forgot about that. Especially since my roommate is a devout cyclist and bike mechanic (guy that gave me a can of T-9) Careful when your prying off the needle... be patient and pull up from the face of the gauge as evenly as you can on both sides. Of course, only pull up from the center (black) portion. Title: Re: 67 Speedo..Help ! Post by: Kaferdog on February 10, 2010, 07:33:34 am Very KooL....I thought so but just wanded to be sure !..Now just gotta find a doner..!.....Drag Day is just around the corner !...Thanks guys , you've been a great help...!
