Title: Epic burnout fail...
Post by: Fastbrit on February 16, 2010, 10:14:59 am
Remember that story from Ron Fleming about a rod exiting the Schleys' motor and landing at his feet? Must have looked a little like this… ;D

I like the comments on it. Especially the guy singing the praises of the neon. Bragging about how it ran 13`s....

Why is the window all sealed up? Some how think this was deliberate.

I remember reading a story some years ago on the 'Net posted by a magazine in the USA (one of the more obscure hi-po car titles...) about how their tech staff decided to test a nitrous installation on a boring everyday sedan. Was it really a cheap way to get reliable horsepower, and all that. Well, guess what? They rented a Dodge Neon, and installed a basic 50-shot NOS set-up. Took it to the drags, and got times with and without, etc. Yes, the 50-shot worked, so how about 100-shot? Yup, that worked, too. So they started playing with the timing, and then leaned it out a little – each time getting a few tenths off the time. All this was recorded on the website for anyone to read, rental company and all, if they ever cared to look. Anyway, they then figured, what the heck, let's go for it and tried putting bigger and bigger shots of nitrous in the poor four-banger. In the end, the thought – let's see what happens with a ton of nitrous but no extra fuel. The thing survived but it had lifted the head so badly that it hardly ran. But they had proved that nitrous did indeed work, getting the Neon down into the 13s, if I remember correctly. They then delivered it back to the rental company as if nothing had happened... Guess two people have now found a good use for a Neon! :D

A good friend of mine was inspecting rental car returns at the time.  Some other crappy Plymouth was being returned to Chrysler corporation, and the car was wasted from rocker to rocker, exhaust squashed flat, and oil pan blasted.  He realized it was in Mopar Action, when the east coast boys were jumping it off road in AZ.  License plates matched the car the rental agency had to purchase from Mopar.  My pal calls the Chrysler rep and faxes the copies of the articles(days before scanners) endorsing the abuse of rental cars.  A big lawsuit ensued,  Mopar Action wasn't able to be released that month.  The magazine bought that car and the Neons they blew up, paid some legal fees and now doesn't endorse trashing rental cars.  A couple years later we went to the Pacific Nationals in Vegas, and my buddy has the balls to tell the editor of the magazine his name and his role in the whole sordid affair.  The editor turned his back to us and was about 8 shades of red.  I still don't know what my buddy's goal was that day, but I thought we were going to get our asses handed to us.  Now, when I call him I always say in my best "New Yawk" accent, "Hello, this is Richard Ehrenberg calling, could you not fuck with my magazine?"

i never saw the actual burnout, looked more like a "power drop" to me. rev it to the moon then drop it into drive, either way i love to see parts come thru the hood
