Title: What sealants and threadlocks etc for what application on engine build...
Post by: JLaw on March 07, 2010, 21:03:07 pm
Hi,

I need some advice on which sealing compounds, threadlocks etc are best for a leak free engine build.. I hear curil k2 is good for case halves, what about cam plug, barrels to case, head to barrels, oil pump etc. What engine break in lubes and oil do you run also..

Thanks for any tips.

Cheers, John.

The best case sealant in thew world is "Yamabond"  Yamaha makes a compound for gasketless two stroke case halfs that works amaiing.

Loctite 642 on rod bolts, head nuts, and gland nut only.

what should be used for the cylinder head studs? the part that enters the case? red loctite (to tighten) or PTFE thread sealant (to seal the oil inside)?

Hylomar blue Aerograde for case halves, alternator tower and oil pump to case and oil pump cover. Also this I put a small amount under main head washers.

Loctite PTFE sealant for mains studs and oil fittings

Loctite Copper RTC for cylinder to case

Strong green Loctite threadlock for oil pickup to case

I know that RTV is like f..k word in aircooled language. But RTV Copper sealant for cylinder to case sealing, very good product. I have long time experience with this application. I wouldn´t use it anywhere else on aircooled engine.

Why is RTV bad in a aircooled engine?

many aircooled engines died from overuse of RTV. People sealing oil pumps, heads, crankcase halves, oil coolers etc...I´ve seen an engine "sealed" and glued together with tranparent silicone you use in your bathroom. Then you have chunks of RTV floating in your system, clogging oil galleys, leading to a disaster.

I agree that RTV is a great bathroom sealant but i would never use it in a VW engine.

Trust me.  Yamabond, case halfs, cylinder to case, the stuff is unbelieveable.  I have had engines bone dry years after assembly...  and it cleans up easily...that

Which Yamabond? There appears to be several to choose from.  :)

Any overuse of silicone is bad and it does not matter if it RTV or normal type.

yamabond makes a drying and a semi hardening compound.

You want the semi hardening.  The one for metal to metal sealing applications.  the motorcycle shop can help you find it.
