Title: 90.5mm Mahle cylinders specifications... Post by: bugnut68 on March 10, 2010, 02:33:29 am What is the maximum tolerance for 90.5mm cylinders, in terms of checking for out of roundness? I've got a set I'm going to measure and want to know what tolerances to look for. They look good at a purely visual standpoint, but will be measuring them with a bore gauge to make sure they're not excessively worn. My hope is all they will need is a honing and new rings, as I was told they came out of an engine that wasn't run long.

They all measured in exactly the same. What a relief. Looks like a new set of rings and a hone job are what I'll be pursuing to freshen them up.

For anyone that's interested, I bought the parts from Walter Shit, I mean Schmidt, who used to run the Wally Gator Bug at Pacific Northwest VW events in Oregon and Washington. I thought he actually he seemed like a nice guy, but obviously my former instincts about him were true. Bottom line is I'm glad the P/C's turned out to be okay. I usually just buy new, but it seems to me that pistons and cylinders, depending on their application, are sometimes thrown away way too soon. Had they come out of a turbo engine I probably wouldn't have bought them. Lol. |
