Here's some pictures of my '66 bug which I have been working on for the past 3 years. Just thought I would post a selection of pictures.

thanks for the comments, will hopefully have the bottom finished over the weekend, swirl pot welded in and mid baffle. Will take some pictures once this is done and in the car just to make sure just before the top is welded on. It has been made to resemble a standard vw tank, and will be fully polished, hopefully with all the welds exposed.

shortened the silencer by 20mm today, and clearenced the areas which were tight to the inner wing and the rear tyre when the suspension was compressed. Just need to get it onto the polishing wheel.

yes, made a male/female die with my mate Pete who does the welding stuff for me. Wish I could do it myself but he has all the kit and the skill.

Exhaust completely finished now with a 45 degree stainless bend kicking out just under the wing. Turbo cover made from Ali, needs trimming up and polishing. Traction bar finished (bar paint) and bottom half of tank popped in place, fitting like a glove. Not a bad weekends progress but camera out of juice  ::) so will get some more pics up soon. Thanks for looking, Alex

fontana grey L595 the original colour, painter seems happy and has given me a good quote. Will be with him on wednesday for the next month or so. Give me a chance to sort out all the other bits and bobs, finish detailing the wheels etc. Then the interior will be done and the deadline in the end of july, fingers crossed. Cheers, Alex

Interior has already been made, narrowed original front seats (to fit round cage), rear seat sectioned and rear seat base made into two. got a few small creases to get out but it is already to go. Belive it or not, despite the pictures none of the seats touch the cage.

hi, Pete is based in Bexley, Kent (UK) and I asked him about price. Each one is individual, but a basic one without the breather cap using conventional filters would start at about £140 up to a more complicated one with the cap and take offs as required costing about £270. He is on the forum under hotrodder if you want to contact him. Mine is well under way now

not at the moment >:( will do as soon as I have something worth showing. Ported my manifolds this evening and ran them over the polisher. Loads of bits been powder coated so will be getting the box in for the last time and setting up the back suspension. Panels are all prepped for paint, but waiting to paint them so that there is less risk of damage before they get on the car.

gearbox all back together this evening with nice newly powder coated axle tubes, gearbox brace and cradle. I really hope this is not going to leak! Will get the back suspension back in on saturday and then it will be rolling again :)

A few pictures to prove I have been busy! Gearbox in, suspension set up, engine in, rear brace on, sump guard fitted, second breather fabricated and being welded, wiring being installed for the last time. Progress is slow but the car is getting there ;) ;D

Thanks for the encouraging comments, bit of a set back, the paint was getting ridiculously expensive so I have had to stop the painter and finish it myself. All panels are preped and in primer at least so hopefully I will keep it up to the required standard?! Headliner and carpets will be done by the weekend so at least that is something :)

The position of your WB sensor, is not the best. Water could get in to the sensor.

Take a look in the manual. They recommend a position in the upper part of the pipe.
just an advice. :)

sorry but I'm not sure what you mean by a WB sensor, do you mean the lambda sensor for the LM1?

Hopefully it will be okay, cannot really re-locate it now, but water will have to find itself all the way through the muffler and if I go any further up it will be right next to the turbo, which I have also been told is a bad idea? Hopefully it will be okay!

doors now painted, nice and straight, bit of dirt in the paint but nothing which will not polish out and a small reaction on the first coat, but that will also be fine. Will have them hung on the car mid week. Bonnet prepared inside and out, will be painting the inside tomorrow evening. By the end of the week it is going to start looking like a complete car  :o

painted doors, flatted with 2000 then compound using G3. G10 the finishing polish still to do. Pleased with how they have come out but unfortunately I have now got colour match issues which mean I will have to get some more paint on the so called finished shell, re-flatten, polish etc etc. >:( >:(. Could well do without it, but when it is all finished I am sure I will forget all this crap ??? ::)

Thanks mate, just got back from another day painting. Colour is so much better, and with 7 coats will be plenty to get really flat  ;D. Doors have been fitted and gaps are good prior to fitting, so they will be going back on once the paint has hardened off. It will be ready to use soon  ;D

thanks the hanz, now that would be something, although your gearbox looks far more up to the task than mine. I need to look at what is needed to convert a bus box to swing axle, and the costs involved. Something for the future maybe?

Thanks for the kind comments, my mate Pete is responsible for the tank, although I have helped along the way. The traction bar was fairly easy to make as a conventional one just will not fit with the turbo set up. It is all very tight under there.

Quick update, and a belated thank you to all who helped me finish the car and get it to Volksworld, you know who you are ;). I have had the car on the street now and first drive out took me to Santa Pod for Bug Jam 25 where it didn't miss a beat on the way up. Unfortunately it blew the oil cooler up there on the saturday, so the sunday was spent under it swearing, hot and covered in oil. It drove home faultlessly though. I also took it out to a show in East Sussex where it won best pre '67 beetle and ran fine. Next was back to Santa Pod for its first run on the track. It drove there faultlessly and once there I signed on to race. First time on the track for both myself and the car so no hero stuff here, but after "driving" it gently off the line and "driving" it up the track it ran a 15.44 @ 92.18mph. Car is still only running 10psi boost so I was pleased that it felt planted and ran really straight. Next run out I put it into race mode, big burn out, up to the line and launching at around 4000rpm, gearbox went bang big time! Car is now parked up over winter while I am saving for parts, which I have sorted most of now. Weddle chromo main shaft with 1st and 2nd gears. German splined 3.88 ring and pinion with early 4-bolt pinion bearing and a new Magnesium rhino case. Hoping to get a quaife diff in there if money allows. It will be out again next year. I need to firstly sort out the traction issues (think it is just shock absorber adjustment) and run it as is for now. I think there is a 13 in it as is, then I will up the boost and see what happens ;D

I would have shot peened the ring'n pinion for max strength and done what ever possible to prevent flexing in order to keep your R/P alive. When you have done whatever possible to make sure its up to the task I would focus on how you pre-load your car. Last I would have saved enough money for spare gearbox so when this one breaks you are not out of the season.

Yes, I agree that shot peening may well be a plan. I did try and pre-load the box on launch with the handbarake but unfortunately I think that there needs to be some work done on suspension set up next time out because there was apparently some wheel hop present. The car cannot really be tied in any more than it is already so I think stiffening up the rear shocks should help with this. As for saving up for another spare box, well I am struggling to get the money together for a replacement box, never mind an additional spare! The car is mainly a street car so hopefully this "built" box will stand the test of time, especially if I don't get too carried away  ;D

Actuallly there so more stiffening that you can do and need to do -- having fought this issue with my '56 this is what cured it  -- You need to tie in your roll cage to the trans horns right near where you rear solid trans mounts are at -- once that is firmed up and tied in most of your wheel hop will be gone -- QA1 shocks from Lumus will help a ton also

I think you are right, so I am going to investigate and see how difficult it will be? I am thinking about solid mounting the whole lot now, I know it will be noisy but I can put up with it.

I have tied my cage to my frame horns exactly as you did and did not have any problems with them , but I do think your motor and tranny mounts are flexing on your launch. I agree with you that solid mounting both may eliminate your tire shake, beautiful car and well built. Mike McCarthy

Thanks for your kind comments :) I think it will go solid mounted and also put a removable rose jointed brace between the gearbox cradle and the rear stay of the cage as it will be far easier to do it now and it certainly cannot cause any harm, Alex

cheers, my mate Pete did well. He has done another one since for a german look car which is more complicated and intricate than my one.

Finally got the car mapped on the dyno yesterday. They managed to get  a nice smooth power curve and 233hp @ 10psi followed by 265hp @ 16psi. Compression on my engine is set at 7.4:1 so 20psi should be fine. Pleased with that, already feels lively on the street!
