I'm starting this Topic off in the hope that we might be able to discuss the Term 'NOS'.

That's NOS meaning 'New Old Stock.

This is a term that has been Historically applied to 'Genuine VW Factory' made Parts that although may be up to 50 years old are in 'as new' condition and have been stored well and generally accepted to be still New Parts.

In relation to the Lounge, I'm considering NOS to encompass manufacturers /Suppliers such as DDS, Empi, Treuhaft, Scat, Claudes Buggies, Race Trim, Bugpack, Berg, FAT (not meant to be a definitive list folks..) and such that made/sold Items relvent to our particular scene. It's similar I suppose to the 'Mint & Boxed' that Toy Collectors often apply to their Items and means very clearly that  the item is 'as New'.

That said, the exact same criteria should apply to items listed for sale as NOS. That they be in 'New' condition and certainly not  Damaged, Rusty (Dusty is Fine :D) or Used..

I don't mean that anything out of it's original Packaging (if had any) should NOT be considered as NOS. I accept that some some Items might show some signs of wear/age and that's fine as long as the part with a little cleaning  and love can be 'as New' once again. This doesn't mean a complete refurb or rebuild I should hasten to add.

I have to say that I keep seeing items advertised for sale (in the Lounge also) attributed as NOS and most often without the benefit of pictures
, that are both used and in some cases rusty..But being offered as NOS??


Call me fussy, but I can't accept that the general concensus supports this description of NOS?

From it's use in classified ads it usually means "Nasty Old Shit" to most sellers.

VW's are part of Fast & Furious thing, I can almost say that aircooled guys startet all that hype of ilegal drag racing according to California Look books... 8)

It Means Nice Old Stuff    most NOS Stuff Being Offered has Shelf wear bumps and bruises but has never been installed on a car and can have water damage,surface rust,dings,chips, and scratches...

Well stated, and the same thing applies to New Old Repro Stock (NORS) also.

I find that most NOS parts are now just collectible parts, not new old stock.  A mint EMPI steering wheel with stickers and protective blue coating should cost more than a used EMPI steering wheel, but this seems to be less of the case now a days.

Does that mean that the price being asked for 'Nice Old Stuff' is representitive of the condition of the item?

As I would expect to pay less for a chipped or Rusty item as opposed to a clean/unmarked item?

But having viewed items listed as NOS, the prices always seems to be at the Top of the Scale, regardless of condition.

So are we saying NOS means Big Bucks regardless?

NOS  Means Nice Old Stuff. Most Guys Think Because it is NOS that Means New Old Stock And It is  " New"  but  with The Condition I listed Above If You Want Brand New Parts In A Mint Box Never Touched They Are Few And Far Between these Days And you will Pay Big Bucks For It.  I my self was Looking For NOS door handles for my 58 Ragtop I  Bought A New in the Box left handle but could not locate a right NOS  handle  So After A Few Months I found an NOS in the Box Right Handle but is was for a Standard Painted Not Chrome So I bought it and Had It Chrome Plated it just Depends what Level Of Car You Are Building  They also Repops the left side Handle  but  I perfer German over Japan..

yes they are few and far between, but, NOS still means NEW OLD STOCK. nothing else, once a part has been installed, it is NOT new anymore, i dont care if it was only driven "around the block", its not new anymore, thus, should not command NOS prices. that being said, a used part is worth what you are willing to pay for it. i agree that i dont like seeing people advertise used stuff as NOS either, it just makes them look ignorant, and pisses buyers off that they are trying to put one over on us. NEW MEANS NEW.

That's what I've always understood and my point in starting  this thread was to get some kind of clarification on the term.

I just looked at some items described as as NOS and they were in seriously poor condition, scratched, dented & rusty ???

The parts had never been fitted, but had been thrown around a Garage Floor for 30 or so years and would have needed total restoration to be considered usable.

Even in this condition, they were being sold as NOS and a TOP price being asked, the parts were not particularly rare (although desireable) and it's my contention that neither the description or the price reflected the truth of the sale.

I remember the items for sale you're talking about, but I really don't get your point... If you're interested, you buy them, if not then you don't and you don't make a drama about it...

That's how I see it too.
But however, I think that as a buyer seeing something being described as New Old Stock I accept that it 'could' have storage damage and or rust.
As a collector and restorer of old BMXs what I find frustrating is the use of 'NOS' and then reading later in the discription that a certain part was new old stock and then fitted to a show bike and then only used on few occasions.... to me, that is no longer NOS but a used part.

You'd Guess Wrong then.........I think you're pretty far off base with your comments here ??? and making a lot of assumptions to boot...

Nobody (except you) mentioned anything about 'Killer Deals'.......... Just a fair and honest description of items being sold, is what I was talking about.

 I think you'll find that there are also many items offered on the lounge that would benfit from some 'clarification' of the term NOS.

  Part of the very reason for this thread :)
