Title: Tires combo on my GTV...
Post by: El Dub on February 20, 2007, 20:56:36 pm
Well guys, I was thinking of what would be the best tires combo on my 67 GTV bug...

What would you recommand? The front is mild lowered while the back remains stock...

I was thinking : 145 on front, and 195/70/15 at the back...

Any suggestions guys?

THANKS!

Laurent (El Dub)

PS : And please don't shout, the lowered front end is the only non stock item on that GTV...

Radial tires will ruin the "period" look.
I have original Goodyear Blue Streaks on the rear and Bias-ply Pirelli 145's on the front of my 66 GTV.

Pirelli Cinturatos would be period-correct radials too

Depends on your wheels too. The widest tire I can get under the rear of my GTV is a 165 since the offset of the 5.5" Sprintstars is so much. I would LOVE to run a wide XWX, but it just aint gonna happen! Since I am limited in the rear, Ill choose a 145 for the front (135's look too small to me), on 4.5" Sprintstars. This will give me enough clearance for the drop spindles as well (Im glad to find someone else who is not afraid to lower their GTV!!). I am getting Michelin XZX's since it is a vintage type tire, and I must have matching tread from front to rear. The 145s and 165s will fit the 4.5s and 5.5s very well, giving equal sidewall buldge from front to back.

Pirelli Cinturatos would be an excellent choice too, but good luck finding them!!!

I say run a radial tire, its more cal look ;)

What wheels are you using??

Hey El Dub, Is your GTV the one from Chris Morley. If so I was the one who bought it from the add in Hot VWs and sold it to Chris. If you want I could tell you some great stories about the car being posesed and many others you may not want to hear. Larry

THANKS to all for your suggestions! I will make my mind...

=> Zach : rims are genuine EMPI 5 spokes... so 185 at rear might not be a problem...

What kind of tires where the GTV`s originally delievered with. I would go for something like that and get the front beam in the correct height again. Keep the car as original as you can..

Not to many original GTV`s around anymore.

185 may work! Keep the long '67 axles, switching to short axles would just seem wrong to me. Maybe 145 XZX front and 185/70 XWX rear?

Also, there is no harm in slightly lowering the nose! It can be easily brought back to stock height in an afternoon ;D
