Title: Cleaning black ceramic coated exhaust Post by: Brandon Sinclair on April 01, 2010, 18:56:56 pm Any tips on cleaning a black ceramic coated header? I had an oil down years ago and it is discolored in that area.

Scrub off the crud and then I use a metal polish to get the shine back. That may not work on a black exhaust though.

Does it hold up as well as the companies claim? What did you spend to have your header done? I am thinking of having my header (and maybe the heater boxes done too) at some point in the future. BBQ paint sucks and I hate repainting rusty headers/mufflers more than going to the dentist!...but to be fair, the dental lady is fun to look at and the rusty header isn't!

I have used lacquer thinner and a soft rag to clean any oil issues and have had excellant success.

But I always have in the back of my mind, IF i could not get it clean that I would scotchbrite it and go with a good Hi-Temp flat black paint. The 3 mil of silver is still underneath the 1 mil of black so you have a long way to go before you get to raw metal.
