Title: Rusted Bolts?? Penetrating Oils Compared
Post by: Shubee2 (DSK) on April 02, 2010, 13:32:24 pm
For all of you that are mechanically inclined.....
Penetrating  Oils Compared

Machinist's Workshop magazine actually  tested penetrants for break
out torque on rusted nuts. Significant  results! They arranged a subjective
test of all the popular  penetrants with the control being the torque
required to remove the  nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.

Penetrating  oil ..... Average load

None ..................... 516  pounds

WD-40 .................. 238 pounds

PB Blaster  ..............214 pounds

Liquid Wrench ...... 127  pounds

Kano Kroil ............ 106 pounds

ATF-Acetone  mix... 53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50  - 50 automatic
transmission fluid and  acetone.

Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial  product in this
one particular test. A local machinist group mixed up  a batch and all now
use it with equally good results. Note also that  "Liquid Wrench" is about as
good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the  price.

gary, did they spray the mix on or used drops?
just wondering how you could put these chemicals in a spray can.

I use one of these, you fill it with the chemicals of your choice, then pressurize it with an airhose.

About the only thing i've found WD is good at is smelling nice.  Going to try the ATF/Acetone mix for sure.

I have been using ATF and paint reducer for years, Works great. Before I start disassemblely of any project I go around and give all hardware a good soaking.

ATF and paint thinner (naptha) unfroze the rusted solid VW pliers in my tool kit, now they work fine. Lots of anti-oxidants in ATF.
Is Kano Kroil some high dollar super product or what? I've never heard of it.

I HATE the smell of transmission fluid and nothing can ruin my day in the garage more than that smell. How will it smell mixed with acetone or paint thinner? And how is it to breath that mix?

X2. There are many other ways to loosen rusted bolts. Breathing toxic cancer causing fumes isn't on my list.

Mark the thinner avaporate's Or just use staight ATF, Not much works better to brake down rust. If you have ever painted something with a rattle can, You probably inhaled more deadly stuff.

Which is why I've been wearing masks to paint (can or gun) since I was a kid. Can't stop all of it... but I breathe less of that crap in than most do.

HA! You REALLY don't me to explain that in a public forum, Randy. 'Tis quite simple, really. Au contraire; it went rather right.

Do you use the penetrant to get the foil off your head? I don't understand the relation to the post.

Years ago i bought a completely seized T4 engine for practice, that thing was so oily that most bolts came off with my hands, EXCEPT the head/cylinder studs. I tried everything: heat, cold, oils, brute force......nothing. This older Air Force guy here
on base told me: Try candle wax..... No kidding. I heated up the areas around the studs, then hit the torch on the candle and
let the wax drop around the case threads, then more heat. 10 minutes later all studs removed WITHOUT brute force. My 2 cts.

I've never heard of the candle wax thing. Was the guy an Air Force mechanic , by chance?

Wax has worked for me also.  Its a neat trick.

The wax trick goes back to the flathead engine days.

It must be why the bolts never seize on your surfboard.

Hi John, yes he was an AF mechanic/certified welder, being around engines for years. I just couldn't
believe the result of this trick.

Best Regards,
Harry
