Title: IRS and Trans upgrade
Post by: Peter on April 27, 2010, 11:33:23 am
Hey Guys,
was just wondering what to do with my gearbox....
So I will change my S/A box to IRS, and need a diff etc...
I ve read about bus flanges on a IRS box that are stronger..
So are the Diff splided shafts also different to accept the bus flanges?
I would like to know what parts to buy to strengthen the drivetrain...
I would like the to keep the axles and CV's stock for now, but reenforce the box allready if its possible?
was thinking about a quaife too...

Peter

Hi Peter,

I donīt know if superdiffs with the bigger type 2 splines are available (Quaife diffs are) but another option would be to use the flanges from a 181 (trekker/thing) which are bigger (100mm in diameter) but fit on the bugīs shafts/splines. This is what I used when the car still had IRS.
Bye,

Tobi

Hi Peter,

I used stock beetle axles which were modified on a lathe to fit the wider Bus CV joints.

hey guys,
I yesterday bought an LSD from a former autocrosser and trans builder,
he told me its a ZF LSD for a beetle,
but after some searching on the net, I couldnt find the same as the one I have,
so does anybody know what this is?

Cheers, Peter

It might be a real early ZF.
Does it have any numbers engraved on it?  You're looking for a part number starting with 4061 00x xxx
Can you post better pics?
