Title: 40 IDA's??
Post by: Joe_G on February 25, 2007, 18:46:44 pm
These any good on a Cal-Look motor? Can't say I'd heard of them before but have found a pair for a good price. they don't have manifolds, any idea which would fit?

Not had a chance to speak to the bloke yet, but I've been hunting on the net and it looks like they used 40 IDAs on the Salzburg Rally beetles back in the 70's. My first thought was 46's though.

edit- Got that wrong they used 46's on the Rally bgs, the search continues. Going to have to say they can't either be 40's or IDA's, not both :( Lets hope they are 46 IDA's :)

it's write on the reprot that the 44 ida was designed by c.b.(claude's buggies) engineering departement specialkly for the vw engine and manufactured by the weber factory to their specification
if you want the totally reprot on the lounge reply to this and i scan & post this one

fabian

nice to look for the holy grail of carbs. but why?

a 40 IDA has 28 vents. that is a small carb in my book. i run 40 idfs with 28 vents, but seriously want to fit at least 32 vents.

and i know it may opset a few on here,  ;D

gasp!

it's not because it's a IDA that it is a better carb.

told you you wouldn't like it.

seriously: i have looked for 48 dells but if i hadn't found those i would have bought 48 IDA's. they are perfect for dragracing, but i am not convinced about their superiority for streetengines.

just my honest opinion.

anyway good lock on finding those and PROVE ME WRONG, PROVE ME WRONG CHILDREN   ;D ;D ;D

Cheers Speedwell, I'll dig that copy out :)

ninolas, why do you call them the holy grail?? Surely vents can be changed?

well that would make an excellent carb for a small engine, something like a 1600 or 1641. i don't quite get the 48's on small engines. a 44 or even a 40 will most of the time work better. but if you can have it in IDA version that would be very cool. a small big engine!

ps; i don't know if they are that rare or not. but since i have never read anything about them i can say they are not common...

what do you plan on doing with them if i may ask?

Speedwell Thank you but I'm a bit of a magazine nut and have a complete set of VW Greats.

nicolas, I've no idea what the plan would be, maybe sell them on, maybe put them on a 1641 :)

We have used IDA:s on all kinds of motors, from stock 1600 to huge type fours....purrs like kittens but takes it toll when it comes to maintenace..........40/44 IDA:s was a Claudies Buggy thing from the cave age.........looking for possible IDA buyers I would say!!

No such thing as 40 IDAs. CB was probably trying to sell more carbs, so they called them IDAs. No way those carbs in the article are anything but IDFs!!

I not remember where I read it , but some months ago I found a text on a magazine (Voksword I think, and Peter Noah on the retro ) about the Solex 40PII-4 talking about it like the IDA of the 40 carbs… For sure they are more effective than 40 Weber ou 40 Dell, but they are “on-off” too J … but could It’s real? ???

Zach has it right – calling those particular carbs "40IDAs" was purely a marketing thing by CB at the time. IDFs were new to the scene, nobody had heard of them but everyone knew IDAs... I saw a set that had the "IDF" stamping modified to read "IDA", new out of the box... ;D

Well i rang them up, phone call went a bit like this
me - Hi I'm calling about the 40 IDA's
them- oh yeah what do you need to know?
me - Um, are you sure they are IDA's as 40 IDAs are 3 barrell carbs?
them - well that depend what car they were for wouldn't it (laughs) my boss has been doing this a long time and knows his stuff.
me - well if you could just check for me
them - ok (on hold music) seems there was a mistake they are IDf's
me - OK Thanks
them - click!

:)

The Salzburg Cars definetly ran 46 IDAs!
Memminger in Germany recently built a replica of the Salzburg beetles:

Look at that fan shroud!  I wonder if it cools as well with the ducts relocated up high to clear the IDA linkage?

Pretty Neat Stuff there on that site!
