Title: DKP Preparing to embark... South Calif to Big Sur, CA
Post by: Jim Ratto on May 12, 2010, 17:52:19 pm
This Saturday, fellow DKP member Carlos DeAlba and I are taking my blue '67 up to Big Sur, CA, for a small concert and camping @ Pfeiffer Sate Park with a good customer of mine from Bay Area. My plan is to avoid all interstates and freeways, at all costs. If you know me, you know driving two lane old backroads in my VW is one of my true loves. Last night I filled my trunk with some camping gear and couple of spares (clutch and accelerator cables, few bulbs and a card of fuses). We depart hopefully 9am Saturday and will be climbing over the mountains of Los Padres Nat Forest by 10:30 or so. Saturday night we'll be treated to a free show in the Big Sur redwoods, by a truly stunning Grateful Dead tribute band. Let the beer flow..... I'm ready.
I'll try and share some pics of the trip next week.

yep, something on the order of 320 miles each way, every step of the way submerged in beautiful California landscapes. I'm like a little kid on Christmas eve.

hahahah... sorry to disappoint Dave, haven't 'walked in the green garden' in probably 10+ years. It will be fun all the same though.

funny you mention that. About 20 yr ago my buddy and I "got stuck" on the side of Hwy 1, near Lucia for 6 hours or so. The car was fine. We weren't.

That should be a nice trip driving up the coast on Hyway 1 or the 101. I remember making the same trip up to Seattle Bug In in Kent Washington back in 1972 drove my 56 oval with a 1641 with dual 40P11 .  Nice trip all the way through the redwoods have fun

Have fun, bring a radar detector.  ;)
Just did a rally last month in that area.
Hwy 1 road conditions about 30 minutes south of Carmel were pretty bad.
In two sections it is reduced to one gravel lane with stoplights controlling the 2 single lane areas.
So we just went slow in the Congo line and enjoyed the views.
If you take hwy 58 you can turn onto the 229 north for a short and sweet roller coaster ride.
After the 229 roller coaster ride good food fair prices 5 min away at the Loading Chute in Creston.

Hi Ted, only thing I'm doing to the car prior to trip is changing oil/filter, check tire pressure and give it a good bath. The car always runs same setup, minus the pulley swap every May/November (big to power and back to big).
thanks guys,

O/T:  Blue Mahles???  Don't believe we've seen that before!

Towards the end of the '69's existence, the silver color on the right rear wheel began to fade away revealing a nice shade of blue... the other three remained silver.  Another mystery.

In 1981 (that's the date on the back of this pic), Sharon and I set off for Oregon in the trusty '69.  We spent a night in Eureka and headed out the next morning before sunrise.  Back then, we never went ANYWHERE before "talking  to Mr. Green" and that day was no different.  We were in a skunky fog when Sharon noticed that we were going the wrong way on a deserted one-way street.... FAAAAAKK!  I looked across the street at a doughnut shop with two police cars and several cops waving at us.  A large black dog in the back of one of their cars took "notice" and started barking like crazy!!  What to do??  There was a motel on the right corner and a spot between two parked cars where I figured I could back into a parking lot... well, there was no DRIVEWAY and I shortened up our exhaust backing into the curb.  By this time, a cop was headed our way on foot and we promptly got out of the car... Sharon quickly kicking the evidence under the car.  After the cop took my license back across the street, we waited for what seemed hours but in reality was probably fifteen minutes and were let go.  Needless to say, we were stunned as I'm sure we both reeked.  After getting back out on the road, Sharon was amazed that I was most upset by what I'd done to the exhaust instead of being thankful not to have gone to jail ::).  If you look closely, you'll notice the headers are hanging a little low... ;D

Yep, I went  8). Made it back yesterday about 1pm, safe and sound. And in mostly 1 piece. About 30 miles from home I noticed a "pop pop" upon lifting throttle in traffic... figure plugged idle jet. Nope, found 3/4 manifold has a little split in it. Oh well, no biggie get it welded up and back on the road.
Carlos had business come up @ last minute and couldn't make it, but there's always next time....
