Title: Cal Look Split Window
Post by: LuftsickTero on May 13, 2010, 18:27:46 pm
I have been semi-seriously looking for a new project and came across a '52 Split that's for sale..

I was originally looking for something around 10 years younger, but on the other hand the body work (labour cost as I am not going to do rust repairs myself) and paint will cost the same to all Beetles, so maybe it would be more worthwhile to spend it to older car..

Somehow figuring out the layout for cool Cal Look Split is more difficult than to the early 60's car that I had originally in my mind. The dash is especially difficult area where my imagination shoots blanks.. Having pods to house set of VDOs has been done in both iconic Splits but doing something different and keeping it Cal Look and not turn it to Custom  ???

Choosing colour is also difficult, but have few ideas. Somehow bright colours seem odd, but don't know why.

I don't know why Split would be more difficult but maybe it is so since there has only been two famous examples in early days of the Look and not a many more since?

Let's see some examples of Splits (and Zwitters) if you have them.. Other than the Buehler or Mahaffey/Craig cars too.

No issue.  Just meant at a fun poke.  Marc and me joke about his car.  He's owned it since the early 70's but some people out there still call it "Billy's car".  Your comment was just the opposite.  Thought it was kind of funny.

Well, while you were away from the scene the original colours became popular. My car won't be the original Chesnut Brown for sure..

Wow, looking exclusively at the stock color chart, those are some challenging colors to pick from.  If not the Chestnut Brown, what color are you leaning towards?

I decided a long time ago to paint my '51 in Porsche Conda Green, like the Mahaffey/Craig car, although I've owned it for five years now and done nothing to it at all! I'm just paranoid about someone getting there first! :o

I like the late '60's early '70s Porsche colours - they fit the era of cal look that I like.

What I meant that the fashion changed which necessarily wasn't all good as it killed a lot of innovation and introduced a lot more rules. What I have to do is sort of try to figure out what you would have done in 1979 and that wasn't looking at the '52 color chart and choosing from one of 5 colours  ;)

I like that car too much to replicate any of it.

I know what you mean, I'm not going to build a full replica, but something that takes inspiration from it. I mean, how far can you go with a green split bug on BRMs?! ;)

(read boiling the hide's off it as much as posible) ;)
the car is a constant work in progress and will never be finished as I like to tinker with thing's a bit  :)
At the moment its spoting a 2165 with about 1500 miles on it , married up to a Cogbox gearbox , the body's a 49 and pan is oval .
Going to pull the motor over the winter and up thing's a little with new cam better con rod's and hopefully a bit of an increase in power  ::)
Interior is sparse with VDO gauge cluster shift light and beard seat's .

Mine's had a a year out to re-fresh the motor up from 2165 to 2276 , changed the wheel's from Fuch's to flat4 BRM 5.5 &6.5 respectively .
slipped in a fat biscuit interior and a full complement of VDO Cockpit gauges .
New motor now has 150 road miles on it & hope to at least triple that before i take it up to shakey for Drag Day for a proper scare  ;)

Yeah pretty much , just clicked up 300 miles on the new motor this weekend , gonna drop the oil @ 500 , fit some new braided oil lines  , AN fitting's , & a pair of rocker covers with a bit more room for movement .
Not overly sure that I'll race yet as I quite like the idea of an engine that see me into the summer for a change  ;) but I'll pack my slicks just in case the red mist rises  ;D planning on driving the car to the track & it'll be nice to drive home too .

Nice pics. Ready for UK Drag day?

Yeah pretty much , just clicked up 300 miles on the new motor this weekend , gonna drop the oil @ 500 , fit some new braided oil lines  , AN fitting's , & a pair of rocker covers with a bit more room for movement .
Not overly sure that I'll race yet as I quite like the idea of an engine that see me into the summer for a change  ;) but I'll pack my slicks just in case the red mist rises  ;D planning on driving the car to the track & it'll be nice to drive home too .

Can I borrow your T4 then? ;D

It belongs to Russ Welch.  The restoration took approx. five years due mostly to Russ' declining health.  Dave Galassi helped
considerably with the build.  Here's a few more pics...

Yes, rear window is a little bit different than on a true split vw bug.
It is not a zwitter model - front windows are in one piece, and on the rear, car has heart shaped lights.
If only I could see a dashboard to be 100% sure... 8)

It belongs to Russ Welch.  The restoration took approx. five years due mostly to Russ' declining health.  Dave Galassi helped
considerably with the build.  Here's a few more pics...

The picture of Greg Aronson looking in the window brings back an interesting story.  We had driven the car over to Sarge's for a get together and everyone wanted to go for a ride, including Greg.  So, we idled out onto the main drag and at the light, I jump on it and row through the gears.  As I back off the throttle, Greg simply says two things.............Mahaffey's car was louder, and change the idles to 65's.  One answer I can't vouch for, but the other was right on the money.
When I worked for Russ in the 80's, he was out racing Class 10 1600 cars in offroad events quite often during the year with another racer named Roger Mortensen.  Little did I know until that day at Sarge's that Greg also campaigned a Class 10 car and raced against Russ back in the 80's.  They were old friends.
Not much Greg hasn't done...............or Russ for that matter.

We're hoping to make a few passes on that car and the Pepco car (back on the road again!) at Bugin next month.  Should be a lot of fun!

Dave

Am I the only person in the world that doesn't like the Hammered Inc faux split? The chop is beautiful, the workmanship is superb, but I just don't like the overall concept. I don't think it needed the split window adding. I'm not a fan of the whole satin paint thing, and the stance is wrong. Personally, I'd have kept it as a threefold ragtop oval window bug, but still done the chop, shiny paint in something obscure and dark, amd fitted it up with a set of Ercos.

Russ and Marc's cars are more my cup of tea, and exactly what I'd got planned for mine... :'(
