Title: My oval
Post by: Dimi DKG on May 18, 2010, 20:17:28 pm
I used to be involved quite a lot in the VW scene in the early 90s, mostly into vintage ones and then I got fed up with crap local meetings, Herbie lookalikes, eyebrows on SuperBeetles, you name it. i gradually got rid of the Fastback, bay Panel... and then... the bug struck me back when I was contacted by the Chimay International Raceway who was looking for a French MC for the first EBI. A friend of mine is their regular MC in French and English for classic cars and bikes meeting but he declined doing the EBI as he doesn't know much about VWs and Cal looks. at first I hesitated and then... I just had to be a part of it. It took me about 2 weeks to find a car, unfortunately I got it just one week after the meeting. My car was originally sold in Sweden. I wanted a solid one and found it at Kieft & Klok in Holland. They had 2 or 3 other Ovals but it was the colour which sold this one to me. I ran it for a while with its 30 HP engine and then... I trashed it and one valve didn't like it. Made it home on 3 cylindres, though. Lusting for more performance and power, Johan, a DKP fellow member (funnily enough he's physically a sort of cross between Ron Fleming in his early years and Clyde Berg!), built me an engine. 1776 cc, twin Weber 40 IDFs, all fully balanced and blueprinted, Engle camshaft, ported and polished, EMPI direct exhaust with a Dynomax hooked on it.
we swaped the gearbox for a 4 syncro later one, changed the electrics to 12V, refurbished the brakes (CB discs on dropped spindles up front, dual circuit and large drums at the back), finishing it off with BRM replica wheels. The idea was to turn it into a sort of "tribute" to the Cal Look originators, hence the "DKG RAcing Team" sticker on the engine lid and the stickers on the windows. The body's far from perfect but I just love it as it is and I use it as much as I can. Next step is attending the interior and fitting a Les Leston period steering wheel as well as a few Berg parts : shifter, carb linkage and traction bar.
