Title: Aerial colour?
Post by: LUVADUBDUB on June 01, 2010, 08:38:11 am
Hi guys, I'm kinda new on here, Last weekend I decided to repaint the trim on my beetle in satin black, in my opinion it looks great with the beige. I'm just starting to really hate my aerial now though, ideally I'd like to get rid of it, but I'm running too tight a budget to get it welded up, and also I have a mild (very mild) sound system and radio, so it comes in handy.

I'm thinking about repainting it, either black like the trim or body colour, or the last option is just polishing it up nicely.

I photoshopped it to give you guys an idea.

As it is now

Black?

Body colour?

Or any other ideas?

I will be removing my mirror, so I don't have to think about repainting that.

I'm looking to get this done by the 12th as I'm taking it to a little show.

Thanks

Tom

I would keep the mirror, and bin the aerial. You could use some blanking plugs/grommets to fill the holes until you can get it welded and painted. I'd rather listen to the engine than the radio anyway  ;)

I would keep the mirror

Not an option  ;D I'm binning it! Driving a RHD car in a LHD country isn't ideal with mirrors, let alone having 1 exterior mirror on the wrong side that you can't see anything in anyway...

Which pic do YOU like?

I honestly don't know, I'm not very keen on the polished look, and I think the beige looks a bit dull, I like the look of the black, but I think it breaks up the lines of the car too much, and looks too 'heavy'

Decisions decisions....

You could do the mounts black and leave the rod natural.

I voted for body color. That's how I did my '67 base. Looks good with the grommet black, the base painted, and the mast natural. Provides some contrast and makes it look like it's part of the car. But I've always been interested in small details like that. It's such a small area, I wouldn't over think it too much. Try it different ways till you end up with something that you like.

I think you should get rid of it and put some rubber grommets in there

Black is nice, or leave the antenna chromed and paint the mounts black.

i would've painted it black, but i have to agree with mark on the body colour. i think he did a great job on his car with body coloured parts!

by the way, i might help to figure out a theme for you car. IMO if you paint the 7 trim pieces black, you've gotta think of the headlight rings, door and hood handles, mirror and door trim (around the window seal) too.

Thanks for the input, I think I've kind of found a theme for my car, I've started painting stuff black, and obviously I won't stop with just the trim. The door handles will be painted, the decklid handle and the hood handle is already done. The trim on the hood has been deleted too. The vw badge on the hood has been painted black aswell. I have cal-look window rubbers, so they're already black, I've just got to do something about the 1 piece window seals. Also the mirror is going in the bin, and replaced by stock round mirrors, possibly resprayed in black, I'll see when I get them. The only other 2 parts I'm not sure about are the headlight rings, which I don't think would look good in black, and I don't really want to do them body colour either, so I guess they'll stay chrome for the moment. Also the horngrills, I'm scared that with black ones it will look as if there aren't any grills.

Too many decisions to make  ???

On US model '67s or made to look like us ones  ;D the painted headlight rings look really good. I'm not so sure on euro models. I've started by painting the insides of the headlights in black, that should make the front end much nicer and more sinister. I may start up a build thread (even though it's already built) more just changing bits :D

If we all had it figured out, what would we need discussion forums for?
