The Cal-look Lounge

First of all, I came down from Vancouver, BC, Canada for the VW Classic weekend and had a blast!

A car that perked my interest was this Sea blue (correct me if I'm wrong) on red 1964 type 1 in the DKP line up.

The shifter was engraved with "tim's toy" on it.

Anyone have any more pictures or info on the car?  I know it was featured in Hot Vw's, but what issue?

That is Tim Walton's car.  He and his son Taylor built it, and it is a very nice car.  Taylor told me they took the high compression killer out and built it a little more sanely, so his dad could take it on cruise nights.  He said it still was very fast.

Thanks for your interest in my car. Sorry I missed you at Classic.
You are correct on the color, L360 Sea Blue. This is the original color.
I am the second owner and the car has been in CA it's entire life.
It is a complete pan off restoration by my son and myself

As you mentioned it was in Hot VW. January 2010. (no cover DANG IT).
We recently built another 2275 power plant with 9.5 compression.
We Dynoed at Wiks in Las Vegas at 186 HP.
Since it will be street driven it's nice being able to run pump gas.
The pulley is a Fischer.
I would post more pics but am very new to this computer thing and don't know how.

The original owner had me roof her house.
While meeting her the first I discovered this little beauty  rotting away
in her driveway and promptly asked if she was interested in selling it to me.
No too many memories to let it go.
Approx. 5 years later she called and wanted to know if I was still interested in her VW.
I obviously said YES, hitched my trailer and rushed over before she changed her mind.
She cried when I took it away. I stopped by after Classic in 2008 so she could see the
finished product and let look at my photo album.

Thanks for relpying to this thread!  I will definitely have to get myself the Jan 2010 issue. 

I've noticed you've gotten rid of the decklid seal/metal and gone with one on your decklid instead.  What vehicle is that from? I also noticed you have no front sway bar; What are the suspension set up's front and rear?

Thanks for all of the compliments guys!  Building the new engine and getting it all fixed again was a chore and staring at it in the garage unfinished starts to get a bit upsetting.  Finishing it and driving it though with all of the compliments and my dad getting the enjoyment of the car makes it all worth it. Front suspension is stock with sway away adjusters and KYB shocks.
Rear has 30mm torsion bars, urethane bushings and KYB shocks.
The seal at the deck lid is from a Mexican beetle.
The hood seal/metal was also removed and same type of seal as deck lid.

The engine swap has made it much better for street use.
I also replaced the M&H front runners with 135 Firestone F560.
It now lets me drive instead of the car driving me.

I never noticed that the front hood seal/metal was shaved off as well!  looks clean! I ended up finding the issue of Hot Vw's that the car was featured in.  I knew I recognized the car from Hot VW's.  In regards to your brake set up, it is relatively stock?  Any upgrades like the Master cylinder or braided flex hoses?

Good job on getting your dad hooked on VW's  :P  When I was only 9 years old, my family went to germany in 1995 to visit my family and my grandfather picked up a new Audi while we were over there.  We (as customers) got to have an Audi factory tour and cars just stuck in my mind since then.  At 14 years of age I was bored ay mt uncles summer camp so I ended up walking to the nearest chapters and bought my first a Hot VW's Magazine (I was reading a lot of road and track or car & driver at that time).  I purchased my first beetle was when I was 15 years old which was an old school 1967 cal-looker - shaved chrome, one piece windows, tinted windows, chrome steel wheels, etc.  My second one I got when I was 16 and it was a 1966 beetle that I bought a Porsche Super 90 motor for with IDA's, worked heads, a Norris camshaft, etc.. fun car  ;D.

I was inspired by reading the thread on your 64 in Hot VW's as my story of early involvement in the VW scene is similar to yours.

Gotta love the spray chrome from Pepboys!!!!! That stuff rubs out great. A little 50spf on the doors next time, that will help with your problem Tim.

We used a German (Ate) master cylinder, stainless brake lines (through the tunnel) with AN fittings, braided flex lines and stock brake drums. The brake lines are polished where visible (if under the  car)  ;D. The backing plates are powder coated (Gloss Black) and all original hardware was clear zinc coated.
I didn't open the Hood are Classic, probably why you didn't notice the hood seal.

Modified MSD v8 distributor by Heads Up Performance.
Fischer balancer pulley.

Hi Tim, that's a great combo of a motor. I ran that exact same cam but in hard weld form, bought it from Babe Erson himself before he passed on, Steve was working for Babe then. Ran that cam in my 2nd generation 2303cc, the car it was in was my beater 69' when I was working at Bergs, drove that car everyday, 5 days a week, 50 miles a day, and with a few burn outs when I left for home. Had MUCHO POWER when I wanted it. I did advance the cam a bit, and worked great. I still have that cam with the lifters put away for a future motor someday. The only thing, I ran Berg 1.45 rockers, had over .600 lift. ON THE STREET. Like I said, no problems. That must be a blast to drive Tim. Sorry, got a little excited there. But that is a kick ass cam! And sounds like a kick ass motor!
