Title: Congrats to Ed Craig!
Post by: Sarge on July 18, 2010, 20:47:18 pm
In case anyone missed it, yet another old guy has returned to his roots...

"After a 30 year absence, (about), from the Bug In's ....look for the return of DRA in 2011.  Featuring the legendary Split Window of Marc Buehler in its newly restored condition, and the not so legendary, (but at least it's green), Karmann Ghia of Ed Craig."

Way to go, Ed! 8) 8) 8)

I scammed that off the Buehler thread.  Come on Ed, let's see some pics and hear about your new car!

From the looks of your Ghia, you will probably want to recover that seat? But then, who can get back there anyway?

Is it a 'vert? And did it have DKK stickers in the windows?  ??? Looks a very nice car, whatever! :)

I think the one you are referring to is Ernie Barrons.

Post by: Rennsurfer on July 21, 2010, 00:29:52 am
Glenn's correct... the green 'vert Ghia is Ernie's and in our club. There's been a hardtop Ghia that same color and wheels at the last few VW events for the last year and for sale. If Ed's car isn't that one, then there's a twin car just like it.

Title: Re: Congrats to Ed Craig!
Post by: edcraig on July 21, 2010, 02:43:32 am
It's a coupe, not a convertible.  Thanks to Rev Bob for the assistance with finding a rear seat too!  My other options were a Hello Kitty Bean Bag, or two really short bar stools!  I think the original style rear seat is the better of the three options!   ;D

I bought the car from a old buddy of mine.  The paint and wheels are pretty much what I was looking for.  I have the interior out now and will change out everything except for the headliner.   The motor is a 69 x 94.  I'm going to leave the long block as is for now, but all else will change.

Buying back my Split Window just wasn't going to happen, so for me, this was a good choice.  Always liked Ghias, and the green really worked for me.  Should be a fun car.

That's the one! I had a feeling it was for sale and thought it could be the one. With the Jim Logudice/Mike Billing '67's mix up, plus buying the wrong daily driver on Monday, I'm not having a great week! :D

Title: Re: Congrats to Ed Craig!

I'll see if I can take a pic tonite.  They came with the car, so I know little more than that about them.  I guess they are a older Scat design from the way the brackets mounted.   As mentioned, I'm replacing the entire interior of the car, so no need for the seats.

I know this Ghia, it was at the JC Open House, Classic Weekend, it was parked next to me with For Sale signs on it. The owner, at the time was real cool. That Ghia is really nice. I do have pics, but out of respect, I'll let Ed do the honors, after all, it his Ghia now.  ;D

Ted...yes...probably the same car.  I saw it at a few events the past year before buying it a short time ago.  Here's a pic of one of the seats.

Post by: DKK Ted on July 22, 2010, 05:41:33 am
Thanks Ed, My good friend Randy "Kaferdog" is looking for these seats. He's working tonight, but when he gets home he'll check this out and either I or Randy will let ya know He is, as myself are also local (Whittier), Randy, (Montebello). I know Dustin is also interested, so will let ya know ASAP. The seats DO look good, and I remember seeing them at JC. Thanks Ed

Ed ..Will the tracks work in a bug also...?...I would imagine they would ...? what are the chances I could check them out in person...?I'm in Montebello very close by you ..?

Title: Re: Congrats to Ed Craig!
Post by: Dustin on July 23, 2010, 07:40:41 am
Randy, I'm pretty sure the seat tracks are wider on a ghia. They list different mounts for beetle and ghia.

Thanks Dustin.....I know you run these seats in your car(I think) ...if so How do you like them...?

New tires today.  I really like the Conti 155/60-15 much better than 145's.  No more fender rubbing up driveways or during a full turn..  The braking and cornering is improved too.  Plus I think they look pretty good.  Have Continental 195/65-15 for the rears too.  I still need to shave the wheel studs so I can use Porsche cap lugs.

Hey Ed, was pleasure meeting you Sat. morning when picking up the tires with Randy. Your Ghia is awsome. Just with the changes you made so far has made a BIG difference in the look. Those tires gives your Ghia a whole new look. Now with the back seat and lights, WOW! Say Ed, if ya need a radiac cut off tool, I have one also with a die grinder, if you have air. Thats what I had to do with my studs, cutting off that extra material so the lugs will fit. Let me know if you need it.

By the way...thanks to some of my buddies for the parts assistance.

Ron Greiner... Scat Procar seats.
"Big guy" John Lazenbey....Hella Headlights
And from the legendary DRA, Marc Buelher and Rev Bob...original 71rear Ghia seat.

FYI..the car drives great with the new tires.

Next up.  Complete rear shelf upholstery, new pedal cluster, re-chrome bumpers and swapping out the KYB Gr2's for Koni shocks.  Then on to the motor.
